Lovely book until TOTALLY RACIST page

This is the first time I am writing a review on Amazon. I feel compelled to do so because of the shockingly racist text and illustration representing that African / Black Americans use “wazzup” as a greeting and references to “snoop dawg.” I implore that the publisher and author to have better multicultural sensitivity and competence.

Includes racist stereotypes

I loved this book until I got to the page that says "yo," "wazzup" and "smart snoop dawg." I was going to give this book as a gift, but because of this bizarre page in the book that appears racist and based on stereotypes, I am returning this book. What a shame; the rest of the pages are lovely and this book would have been wonderful if it didn't suggest that Black Americans all speak in nonsensical slang.

I received this book to read to my toddler daughter and found this particular page highly inappropriate. Along with a few other racial profiling issues. No thank you. We immediately decided to make the return.

Really fun for story time

I read this fairly regularly at my First Five Years story times at the urban library I work for. It's a brilliant book to get started with. I normally sing my hello song and dive right into this book, because the main character walks down a busy NYC street and greets her diverse neighbors in their native language. The caregivers always enjoy shouting their responses and encourage the kids to echo the greetings.
The art is cute, too! When reading aloud, I do slightly alter the dialogue in the park scene with her friends because it feels a bit forced/dated. But no one notices and the story keeps flowing.

" and "I Love You" in other languages

Hola!- I've always wanted to learn to say "Hello," "Good-bye," and "I Love You" in other languages. My LO was born 12-3-17 and I knew reading to her would be a priority. I read about this book on a Popsugar article about diverse children's books and quickly ordered on Amazon. I love it. The character is sweet, the art is inspiring to my LOs development creativity, and I love the learning aspect of it all. It's a quick fun read with a great page on how to pronounce everything. Def recommend and keep it forever and pass it on! Ciao!
