Are the HD100 bad? No, but when compared to the PX100 model they fall way-short in sound quality. The first time I put them on I could instantly tell they were no match and equal replacement for the PX100.
My biggest complaint with HD100 is they are bass-shy. I don't really need lots of low end but these basically have none.
I have always liked Sennheiser products, but when Sennheiser created and introduced this model I must ask them what the heck were they, thinking?
I'm being honest when I say they kinda sound like 1990's Walkman headphones. They are clear but only in 1k-10k range. It's possible these might be good for audiobooks but definitely not music... (perhaps a trumpet solo if you're into that). I don't like my music super loud at the office but these at full volume in my phone or PC are pretty sad turned all the way up.
They are very comfortable on the ears and lightweight thus the extra star. However the folding feature doesn't really make them smaller and would probably break if used too much. The headband is plenty large and will probably fit over a football helmet. A thing for me that is annoying is they have wires which hang from both speakers. The jack is angled 90 degrees which is nice but the cord is kinda short and gets tangled quickly just by walking around.
Bottom Line: These are probably not worth the hassle of me returning so they are probably going to go to my mom to listen to her Bible sermons or audio books.
I can only conclude that these are made with the cheapest, generic sound components possible and priced with an upcharge purely for the Sennheiser brand name. Save $20 and buy some headphones at the checkout stand at a big box store - that's what these sound like anyway.
I miss the PX 100's :(
*** UPDATE ***
After several uses, the sound has improved some. It appears that, like others have reported for other Sennheiser lightweight models, these have a break-in period, after which, the sound warms slightly. I, still only giving a 2 since these do not have an adjustable headband and so are difficult to keep in the right position. Also, the overall sound is still closer to $10 headphones than to anything else by Sennheiser.
