I needed something better than the suction cups to secure my dash cam onto the windshield, behind the rear view mirror. It gets cold enough here during the winter that the suction cup material become stiff and lose their hold. The 3M Dual Lock has worked very well as a replacement. I cleaned the area on my windshield for one side of the tape, and applied it in the relative warmth of my garage, then I applied a matching sized strip to the dash cam and it's been held securely in place ever since. It's much stronger than your traditional velcro -- I'd almost consider it semi-permanent. I CAN remove the camera, of course, but it takes a bit of force to do so. For something that I don't need to move 99.99% of the time, it's perfect.
Unlike velcro, there is only one version of the product, not separate hook and loop sides of the system. It locks onto itself with great tenacity.
We have used it to hang pictures on the boat and have never had one come off the bulkhead regardless of how violent the seas.
The adhesive that attaches the material to objects is 3M so you know its well engineered for its intended application.
It adheres well to a variety of surfaces including varnished wood, plastic and metal.
Because the attachment is so strong its best not to use too much of this stuff to attach things to surfaces or it could become difficult to get them free again.
Just cut off a piece the size you think you need and then attach that piece to the end of the roll and cut the second piece off the roll so that both are the same size. Then its just a matter of peel and stick.
We have used it to hold our laptop securly, as noted above and also for mounting pictures, electronics like modems and routers.
This vendor delivered promptly a a roll this long (6') will probably last us a couple of years, at least
It is thicker than regular hook and loop (velcro) material, so it's helped me two different ways:
1. raised a mounted component so that another component could interface with it. (couldn't make the connection w/ just velcro)
2. prevented a different component's fat bottom plate screws from interfering with regular velcro adheasion.
...Yes, Dual Lock will stick to the soft/fuzzy velcro. (Don't know about the hooky/pokey side. Haven't tried. I doubt it would adhere well.)
So glad I have this in my bag of tricks now.
If you've ever used 3M Command Hook picture hangers, this stuff is like those, but way more hardcore, and thicker. Great stuff.
I use this for FPV cameras on RC aircraft. It holds firm even in high G maneuvers.
It doesn't wobble like conventional Velcro so I get a nice clean image.
But when the time comes it comes apart with a firm tug.
