I rarely write reviews, but feel compelled to for this one. "Start Without Me" is a tightly wound exploration of family, love, friendship, and second chances. By chronicling a difficult day in the lives of two people who meet by chance, but stay connected through compassion, Feldman shines a light on how our decisions shape how others view us and how that in turn impacts how we view ourselves.
As he did in his first novel, "The Book of Jonah," Feldman has created characters that feel so real you could almost touch them. They will make you laugh, make you angry, and most importantly, make you think about your own life and your own decisions. In the end, this book is as much about how people’s impressions and expectations shape who we are as it is about taking control of your life and being the person you want to be.
With "Start Without Me," Feldman has confirmed that he is a writer on the rise. He shows a deft touch with dialogue and a true sense of what motivates human behavior. I can’t wait for his next one.
