I liked the idea of having a device that would allow me to remotely check the temperature of the turkey I was smoking for Thanksgiving. This would allow me to spend more time with the family and less time hovering over the grill... or so I thought. According to the recipe, the bird was supposed to cook for about 7-8 hours. At the 6 hour mark I realised the bird was only reading 135° which was much lower than expected given how little time was left and it had been reading 135° for a while. I went out and stuck the temperature probe in several different parts of the turkey. The readings ranged from 118° to 140°. The readings were the same on the transmitter and reciever. The probe was intact and there was no damage to the wire. I put the probe back in the bird, closed the grill, and watched as it cooked. The temperature stayed at 135° for about an hour and then started going down. At this point I abandoned the ThermoPro and tested the temperature with my Javelin thermometer. This time the turkey breasts read 165° and the thighs were at 180°. The bird was done at the 7 hour mark. Had I continued to rely on the ThermoPro I would have had a dried out over cooked (if not burned up) Turkey.
I have since tested the ThermoPro against my Javelin using my tap water. My water heater is set to around 127°. The Javelin read 130° when placed under running water. I checked several times and the readings ranged from 130-132°. I then used the ThermoPro and it stopped at 114°. I tried again and, sure enough, it started going down and stopped at 73° on the second try. Out of curiosity I also tested my analog TruTemp meat thermometer which read my water as 132° (took a long time to get reading compared to digital thermometers).
When purchasing this I had read some of the negative reviews and thought perhaps they had just received a faulty unit. Besides, if it doesn't work I will return it and at worst I would be out $35 (compared to a Flame Boss which is around $329). I could go through 10 ThermoPros for that price and still be ahead of the game ...WRONG. You need to factor in the cost of the meat you lose during the cook your ThermoPro fails to read properly and the toll it takes on the event you are cooking for (any major Holliday, reunion, party...etc). Thanksgiving was a near miss for me this year.
I agree with some of the other reviews that say it feels like it's made of cheap plastic and would be unlikely to survive a 3 foot drop. However, THAT is the kind of thing I expect under the category of "you get what you pay for". But, no matter how low the price, a product should be able to perform the core function it is being advertised for.

It was great,,, until it wasn't. The probe now registers as almost 200 degrees F in open air. It was never dropped, or otherwise damaged, so there is no explanation as to why the thermometer reads so high when not inserted into anything.
I have used this for smoking meats and home oven use, so no crazy high temps. To make matters worse, you can only plug the wired probe into the small, remote unit (which may be the faulty part here). I could get by with just using the handset, but I can't plug the probe wire into that (big) unit--there's a knock out for a jack, but no jack. Alas, cost-savings.
I have included pics and a red rectangle around the jack-knockout on the main unit that should be able to receive a probe in case malfunctions occur on the remote (smaller) unit. The BIGGEST disappointment here, though, is the lack of communication from the vendor (iTronics) after having registered for the 3-year warranty. I have had this about 4 months when it stopped working properly.
