5.0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Story
Reviewed in the United States on 27 August 2020
Phenomenal. Truly a phenomenal story. “Tip of the Spear” recently released by Ryan Hendrickson is that phenomenal story. As the dust jacket states, this is the incredible story of an injured Green Beret’s return to battle. It is also a story about a man that never gave up, even when an IED in Afghanistan nearly killed him. Warfare, now with IED’s have certainly come a long way since the punji sticks covered in feces during the Vietnam War.

Ryan did eventually return to battle, a number of times back in Afghanistan. His description of his 2016 deployment was especially challenging. This reader found his description of entering Special Forces training as an 18-xray was especially interesting, as his son also was an 18-xray.

When this reader finished Ryan’s story, he had some thoughts. Will the United States military continue to attract men & women with Ryan’s patriotism and physical ability and dedication to become a Special Forces soldier or some other role in the military? With certain American cities currently experiencing violence and riots, caused by people in a similar age group of Ryan & his teammates age group when they went into the military, is this a sign that defense of America will only be done by a small minority of men & women?

Finally, when this reader left Vietnam in September, 1969, he thought that he would never return. As fate has it, he has been back numerous times on business and enjoyed working with the Vietnamese people. Sadly, this will not happen in Afghanistan. That nation will always be at war. Thank you for this story Ryan. I suspect that anyone that reads “Tip of the Spear”, that the story will stay with them for some time to come.
