I've been in need of a new "personal trimmer" for awhile, the last one was dubious at the very start, but somehow I made it work for quite a few years. (Unfortunately, limited to just nose hair because the attachments did more pulling than cutting.) But, as I've learned a thing or two over the years, I found the Wahl Senior to replace my previous beard trimmer – and my life changed right before my very eyes (literally, in front of the mirror). So, I thought I would see what Wahl had to offer on the personal trimmer front. Some of the reviewers here (on this very page!) helped me make my decision – people with realistic expectations, long-time users and "just a little patience".
What It Will Do (aka The Deal):
I have had the Wahl Micro Groomsman Personal Trimmer for about three weeks – and I love what it can do – and has done – for me.
• First, let's be honest, it costs less than $10. Skip one of those ungodly Blue Moon's at the bar this weekend and call it even. (Skip Blue Moon for the rest of your life and thank me later.)
• It's light (easy to hold), attractive (that Wahl gray) and has a cover for the head (to ensure cleanliness)
• Speaking of heads, it has three. I have used the "detail trimmer" the most, but the "ear/nose trimmer" and the "2 position guide comb" both performed suitably in my use.
• The motor puts out more than enough power for my needs and only requires one AAA battery.
What It Will Not Do:
• Cure cancer
• Replace your chainsaw
• Trim the federal budget
• Trim your waistline after a self-indulgent holiday season
For the record, it will also not do the following: come with a sensible, intelligible manual for setup, cleaning, etc. The manual I received, in fact, referred to two of the attachments by the same name at different places on the page. Here's where your common sense (or phoning a friend) comes in handy.
The Wahl Micro Groomsman Personal Trimmer more than does the job for me. It trims my excess hair (specifically, nose & ear hair) effortlessly, it's easy to hold and maneuver – and it's super cheap.
Let’s start with the big issues, like quality. The whole trimmer is very lightweight and easy to use. The casing that holds the battery is very secure allowing the user to be free from fear when washing the device. Each head is solid in design and easy to clean and use.
The trimmer head, which I use primarily, cleanly cuts hair ridiculously close to the skin. The cutting area is about 3/4 of an inch which allows the user to cleanly define any part of your face, eyebrows, beard, goatee, sideburns, etc. the closer you get the skin, the cleaner the cut.
I have never nicked my skin when using the trimmer. Ever. There is a nose hair trimmer included in the kit, but I use the standard trimmer for this job. Why is this important? Because men have weird hairs growing out of our faces. Deal with it. Some men have deep nose hairs which the nose hair trimmer can mow down easily. Other men, like myself, have hair around the nostril. The trimmer gets rid of these hairs easily and cleanly even though the skin inside the nose is extremely sensitive. This means I can cut those hairs with confidence. Cleaning the head is easy. Just run it under hot water and wipe dry.
There is also a guard that comes with the kit. This allows you to shape your facial hair nicely. I’m not the kind of man to try to perfectly “manicure” my facial hair because, well, I’m a man. But if that’s the kind of thing you do, this trimmer is definitely for you. You keep doing you.
The trimmer also only uses one AAA battery, however the life of the battery usually lasts me for several months using it on a regular basis.
The reason I give the Wahl a five star review is because if I ever need to replace it, I will always come back to this product and never look elsewhere.
Very small and thin, lightweight, easy to hold. Packing profile is tiny. Doesn't feel as flimsy as some say, in my opinion, but the cover does fall right off. Probably the smallest tool of its kind on the market without going to something manually powered.
The rotary (nose) hair trimmer attachment works as well as any, seems to cut fairly close, sounds smooth.
Reliance on an easily replaced AAA battery instead of an internal rechargeable means the product should be less disposable. I use an Energizer Ultimate Lithium which shaves off a little more weight and seems to last forever. It will also ensure the motor is less likely to hang up on tough hairs.
The gears of the precision hair trimmer attachment make a ghastly sound that would make an engineer cringe, but it trims very closely without nicking unless you're really ham-fisted, and aside of being useful for moustaches and so on, it can snake into little corners to reach where the rotary attachment fails.
I like it but knocked a star off because of that darn cover.
