John singer sargent. Landscape and figures 1900-1907 While it is interesting for some to take part in sargents travel around europe and sketching impressions from everywhere he went, l found the over 90percent watercolour sketches less interesting. I was looking for more finished works . The majority of these are quick sketches done in very little time . I was not aware that the book was entirely watercolour.
Although I am a huge fan of John Singer Sargent, this book does not meet my needs. It certainly does not show enough of the oil paintings of figures for which he is known for mostly. I therefore need to return this particular book for credit my Paypal account.
Like the previous reviewer I felt disappointed with this book. After several delays for the past YEAR, when I finally got it, I expected this to be a book with many paintings like that on the cover. Previously, they had separated out the studies and watercolors from oil paintings as they did with volumes 4 and 5. They should have done that here as well.
Because they leave us with the year 1907 incomplete. Or at least, for a supposed complete catalog of all Sargent's paintings, I can only hope that's the case. I have several books containing paintings done by Sargent in Italy that they failed to include in this book. They seem to have run out of space. They could have completed the year 1907 IF they had put all the paper studies and watercolors and other cr@p in a separate volume. I don't need the equivalent of every gum wrapper he painted on if that causes the book to just cut off with a probable 2 year wait for the next volume.
The reproductions that are here are excellent, but about 80 percent is just studies.
