To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we do not use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Content appears to be good... Until you notice that it randomly switches into Spanish. No idea how the publisher coqued it up so bad, as opposite sides of the same page can even be in different languages so not just an issue of binding in the wrong pages.
Also noticed a couple of pages where there's a red haze over everything from a printing error.
Will be requesting a refund, shame as the recipes do look good but for £35 for the English version I don't think it's too much to expect that it's actually in English.
A lot of the one star reviews for this book talk about the fact that there is no index for the recipes in Italian. I thought it was worth saying that the version Amazon shipped me appears to be a new edition. There IS definitely an index with Italian names at the back of this book now.
It's enormous! Much bigger than expected, and with multiple recipes per page. Enough recipes to satisfy even the keenest Italian cook. I'd prefer more photographs of the food, but the recipes look concise and easy to follow. I haven't had chance to cook from it yet - I will update the review if it disappoints me, but it looks very promising.
This is not just a book, it's more of an encyclopedia of recipes. I will be trying recipes from this book for years to come. I like the fact it doesn't try to explain every step in excruciating detail. It gives the average home cook enough information to produce some awesome food. Well worth the money
This is a great book, but it's bulky and heavy. Phaidon should probably have split it into volumes. To be fair, not all recipes are of my interested, such as those using some exotic ingredients (brains, kidneys, trips, [insert other weird stuff here]). But it's a great source of inspiration after all. The delivery service was not great, as the box was heavily damaged and the cover of the book was warped in the corners.
what a monster! I could kill someone with this, or break my foot if I drop it. But it seems a lovely book and certainly enough there to keep me quiet and see me out for the rest of my life. Clear recipes and layout, pleasing amount of photographs.
Utterly superb. Get one. A recipe for everything from scallops to lamb shanks. There are about 1300 pages!!! I bought it as a present and should have kept it. Angela Hartnett is right. It is superb. Possibly the best cookery book on the planet.
Best and most concise cookery book I've ever owned, I thought I was quite on the ball with my cookery but this book opens up a whole new world. All recipes are easy to follow and most have minimal ingredients, just try it, you won't want any other in future.
