5.0 out of 5 stars Words to Wong Kar Wai lavish pictures and magic movies by himself - must own

...but a wordy movie book, which is what I wanted and fits. Other "recensionists" have said, this book is a "must have". I agree. Its a smartly conceptualized and nicely written retrospective from the internationally renowned film director, whom I really like for his visually and atmospheric films.
Wong Kar Wai's films explore—in saturated colors, skillful cinematic scenes—themes of (often unfulfilled love, longing, and the burden of closeness). The book is structured as six conversations between Powers and Wong (each in a different locale), including the restaurant where he shot "In the Mood for Love" and the bar where he shot "Chungking Express". Discussing each of Wong’s eleven films—from "As Tears Go By" and "Days of Being Wild" to "2046" and his latest "The Grandmaster", those conversations also explore also the roots of the movies in his personal life. It is a book -by- Wong Kar Wai as co-author and an opening critical essay by Powers. It provides a comprehensive look at his work with more than 250 photographs and film stills, good as reference, however the print reproduction differs a bit form the lavish colors and magic of his movies. This film book is worth its money.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Mood for WKW

Must own. Very large/heavy book full of gorgeous photos that sometimes spread across both pages. The back of the book explains what every photo is, which keeps the photos the focus instead of having captions everywhere.

But this isn't what I'd call a coffee table book/photobook. It isn't something I'd let guests pick up and flip through. I'd have to trust they wouldn't ruin it.

The 'essays' by Powers are well-written and fun to read. The conversations/interviews with Wong Kar Wai are better and worth reading multiple times.

You should own this if you love Wong Kar Wai. Would make a great gift.

Superb photos, dream-like interviews - a feast for Wong kar-Wai fans. I'm slowly reading through it, looking forward to starting a WkW film festival this winter in my living room. A beautifully produced book, and a very reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am very satisfied with this book

I'm about 20 pages in, and everything about this book is magnificent. High quality, over-sized, 2-page photo spreads of stills from films; a detailed bio; interviews with WKW, his wife, Chris Doyle (I'm expecting more form WKW's art director etc). Well-written, full of details, and contextual background as well as film critic appraisals. I am very satisfied with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about great director

I am big fan of WKW so I really enjoy reading it. The book is formed by interviews between writer and WKW. There are some personal/intimate questions connected with movies, that part was something new for me. All the movies have been analysed but in a way that everybody can understand them.I would recomend it to anyone interested in WKW's movies. Wonderful photos!
