I've always been a fan of Sargent's, and for those of you out there who share my predilection, this book is a must. The fluidity and sparkle of his work are among its most attractive qualities, and these are on prominent display in his watercolours. The book is the accompanying volume of an exhibition of his watercolours based on the collections in the Brooklyn and MFA Boston's collections, and they certainly have superb examples of his work in this medium. Beautifully reproduced, the paintings create an atmosphere of sumptuous richness, covering virtually every period of Sargent's work. It's interesting, too, to see his use of the medium growing and changing over time. A tremendous pleasure, and excellent value.
Interesting book with many photographs. I'm slightly concerned that the 'experts' who wrote it seem to have a poor understanding of watercolour painting technique, but that only affects the chapter on Sargent's methods. There's no real discussion of how Sargent relates to modern watercolours either (it is quite clear that his approach is quite different).
interessantes und informatives Buch - die Texte geben viel über die Karriere des Malers preis. Bei den Bildern fehlen mir leider einige meiner Lieblinge. Gut wiederum die genauen Nahaufnahmen die auch die Technik von JSS zeigen.
