As Cambridge-trained Chinese student, i would say this is A Good book to read, but it did not faithfully interpret China’s approach and intention during the rivalry with the US. Some translations are terrible, not sure if Michael can’t grasp the original text or he deliberately did so to fit his, or largely the conservative narrative on China. For me it’s More like an attempt for Michael to build up an explanation or theoretical foundation for the increasingly confrontational and aggressive China policy proposed by the GOP, and more recently, the bipartisan leadership. I am not going to say that’s good or bad, Americans have their analysis and approach to cope with us. All we need to do is to understand what some leading authorities think of us and, always be eager to learn more about and from your rival, and be prepared.
Very interesting book , that makes you rethink the reason behind some of the global incidents that have happened. Knocks a sense of reality into those people who have been ignoring China and focusing on the obvious rogues in the world
This book was recommended by nothing less than Mr Arun Shourie in a talk, however, it does not live up to the expectations as the stuff is natural and normal logic, what is probably coming out in the open. The subject is much more vast, for example, the author has studied in Taiwan and, I may be wrong with my limited guesses, but then there are a host of other sub-cultures in China- Cantonese, Hakka and others, obviously Taiwan will teach such things to him - that their government is hostile to the world, because they are hostile to their freedom.
The author starts by telling his roles in the Pentagon/CIA foreign policy establishment. How he was a great friend of China in advocating for aid to China and helping China but China betrayed him - China had the audacity to study US history and do what the US did!! How dare China aspire to be an equal of the Great USA!!!
Other than the rather provincial viewpoint, it is an entertaining read of some of the backstory of how US foreign policy is conducted.
Highly interesting, especially if you already did some reading on China‘s strategy and future development. Very different but well researched views in this book. The 1-star review here on Amazon (book shows racism, comparable to Elders of Zion Protocols) actually seems to prove the point of propaganda warfare and a West too ignorant and self-centred to understand long term thinking with a distinctly different world view.
