How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we do not use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars A clear introduction to the ideas and forces that have led us to where we are today

A concise encapsulation of The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self. A clear introduction to the ideas and forces that have led us to where we are today in a sexualized and politicized culture obsessed with identity and authenticity. Even if you don't agree with the author politically, theologically or even intellectually I think it is a powerful argument that should be wrestled with and engaged.

This has been developed as a resource for churches and Christian groups, there is a video and study guide, and that flavor comes out most strongly in the last chapter. But I think you can learn a lot by viewing the argument descriptively rather than as a moral critique.

I think this is one of a handful of books that really sheds light on the worldview of our culture and how it operates, how we got here, and where we are headed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty niche

I think Trueman follows in the footsteps of someone like Francis Shaeffer in terms of Christian Philosophers but I'm not sure, even if you like Philosophy, that you'll buy Trueman's specific path of philosophers responsible for declining morality or frankly even find that it matters too much which specific strains of Philosophy lead us here. I'm not even sure that Philosophy has the kind of societal impact Trueman is giving it credit for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlightening Writing on the New World
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 21 May 2022
Carl Trueman enlightens readers on how we came to this moment of sexual revolution and gender discombobulation. He points to thinkers like Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Rousseau and others who developed the ideologies upon which much of the cultural upheaval is based. These, Trueman writes, led to the radical individualism and sexual expressionism that is based on feelings and freedoms to do anything that pleases oneself.

Based on the introduction, it sounds like this book is a shorter version of a more substantive book on the subject, and it reads like it is cut from a larger swath -- it is a bit disjointed. Trueman is aiming his analysis at a very large and broad target that he hits on here and there rather than comprehensively. I think this book has its place in the genre of understanding the cultural upheavals around sexual orientation, gender identity, racial identity and the cancel culture. I was hoping for a more cogent approach to the subjects.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christian thinker explains what he considers proper Christians
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 10 May 2022
In his new book, Strange New World, author Carl R. Trueman informs us that most Christians are not living the life they should live. Times have changed and ideas have developed and improved. Going to Church regularly is not sufficient. He addresses many subjects, including sex, LGBTQ+, liberty, the views of philosophers, psychologists, and more and tells readers how they must change.
