4.0 out of 5 starsA great resource for anyone interested in a career in coaching

This is a really useful book to have on hand if your job involves organizational development and coaching. There are plenty of coaching styles taught in theory but to see how they might be applied in the workplace can be a bit more challenging. The first section of the book includes essays from international authors describing different types of theoretical approaches from Psychodynamic to solution focused to person focused to transpersonal to transactional coaching. Each style is valid and it is up to the trainee to figure out which method works best. The second section explores the different environments in which coaches may be asked to help. Executive and leadership coaching, Life skills coaching, Cross cultural coaching as well as mentoring in the coaching setting are explored. The third section of the book covers the professional practice issues that might arise. Ethics, measurement, evaluation and evaluation of coaching methods, Mental health and research issues are discussed. This may seem to be a text heavy book at times but the information included is invaluable and in depth coverage of theory as well as application makes it invaluable for those studying coaching.
4.0 out of 5 starsA useful overview of the many aspects and applications of coaching

This text book on coaching explores the many different types or branches of coaching and the principles that apply in coaching practice. It offers a helpful foundation for anyone in the coaching field and it helps distinguish between the different types of coaching and the role of the coach in those different contexts. However, since it is examining different coaching areas all in one book it is not really a complete guide for any one area of coaching practice. Thus I look at this more as a general handbook for coaching rather than a complete handbook. The text is pretty well organized and well written and there are also online resource referenced by this book. For a helpful introduction and reference book for coaching this book is worth considering.
5.0 out of 5 starsSage wisdom and academic approach to bringing out the best in others.

I remember when I first started being interested in academia and nerding out on papers and texts - my absolute FAVORITE resource was SAGE, because they always had trials and were generous with their access to various disciplines for the beginning scholar. This text is no different from their other thrilling volumes, and this collection of essays on coaching is truly a must-have for those interested in the field and want to know the inner workings of the craft like a true professional.
Various methods of coaching are discussed here and the reader will be able to assemble a method that works best for them and their client with ease. It is a text that requires you full attention but the payoff is tremendous in feeling like you have taken the time to learn from the best about bringing out the best in others! I love SAGE! Thank you for this amazing volume, I will refer to it again and again and it has reminded me to see what other new and exciting texts have hit the market! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Whew. So, I know nothing about coaching. I was never on a team sport and frankly, more likely to be found in a library then any type of sports when young. However, I work with educational and mental health professionals...both of which often use coaching as a way to impact student outcomes...it seemed wise to have at least a fundamental understanding of coaching. This book provides a terrific overview of different coaching concepts, techniques and more. Well organized.
