I dont have a somatic psychotherapist. I thought this would be helpful for me in giving me tools and practices to do the work on my own. It looks like a really awesome resource, but it's written and designed for professionals and over half the worksheets are either work for the practitioner alone or dependant on the practitioner for guidance/direction. Not what I expected and not useful for me as a patient.
Okay, this is NOT a self help book. It's not a workbook to help with clients. It's a clinician's guide. I was not clear on that when I bought it. Just wanted to put that out there in case you're thinking the same thing.
Somewhere I saw that this was going to revolutionize the way I practice. I couldn't pass that up! So, I got it and read it and it was incredibly valuable, but not for the reasons that I anticipated. I thought it was going to give me new techniques to use in every session. What it did was help me to realize how it feels to be on the receiving end of therapy. The things in this book are things I do naturally because this is how I live. We see the world through our own lens. I had no idea what it was like to NOT live this way, so it's given me new compassion for those who are so disconnected from their bodies and feelings. Great resource for that.
As a therapist, a toolbox is only as useful when I can utilize the "tools" with my clients. Unfortunately, I have become accustomed to electronic copies of content in the form of a PDF that can easily be emailed to clients and or copied for them. I have not found a PDF version of this book---I have the hard copy which means I have to physically make copies by laying the book flat on a copier. It's not really how I want to spend my time... I hope the publisher can also provide a PDF copy of the book--to those who purchase it, so we can actually put these wonderful exercises into practice, with more ease. Thanks!! If you can make this happen, I will change my review to 5 stars. And, if there is a PDF that I am not aware of, please let me know. I have not been able to find it yet.
This is a must-read for every clinician out there. This book reminds us just how much of our experience happens in the body and just how unattended the body can be. It is a wonderfully clear, concise and comprehensive guide to using somatic techniques in therapy that can equally benefit a seasoned or a novice clinician. The author shares her tremendously rich experience by offering very practical and concrete ways of how to guide our clients into their own body, help them become aware of inner processes, and how to make this experience safe and meaningful.
I normally do not write reviews on Amazon, but thought I would do so in this case. I bought the book a few months ago and have really begun to digest the amazing quality of work that has been put into this. Prior to purchase I almost did not buy since someone else noted in their review that there are no PDFs. I reached out to the author, and she was very responsive and warm to my concern and advised there is a link within the book to download the PDFs. Sure enough, the book arrived and I was able to download the digital files! I have used to book and its tools to create two therapy groups that are heavily influenced by the content. After running both groups three times, I nothing but good things to say about this resource. My clients, who initially were resistant to somatic work, have all come around to love this group. In fact, they are two of the more popular groups at my program! Individuals who have been so traumatized that their usual report of "I feel nothing" has shifted. One client has been able to turn her whole narrative of her body being the enemy (for betraying her per trauma) to "my body empowers me. Even when I don't like what it is telling me, it is protecting me and moving me through life." I am so grateful for this book and the different perspective that it provided me in my practice.
