Comfortable Saddle with a slight aesthetic defect

There were some scratches on the left side of the saddle. Amazon customer service was very prompt to attend to it. As it did not affect usage, I decided to keep it. The saddle did not fit my seatpost perfectly but managed to secure it. Felt comfortable sitting on it. The package did not come with rain cover.

I have a few Brooks saddles ... I like them... I have an aged and a softened saddle ... So had confidence buying another ..

Oh dear .. the variable leather thinkness, but ( I assume ) similar softening process means that not all saddles are created equally.

Not a problem if you are wanting to break one in, but if you are opting for a softened, you probably want to avoid that bit.

Also slight disappointing on a wider note that Brooks only offer the softened saddle in a single colour ... That isn't black....

My aged saddle is much darker, but otherwise similar to the softened saddle and a much deeper richer tone, so clearly it is possible. .. heyho .. that's a personal preference.

We all know that a Brooks B17saddle is not an inexpensive purchase, but their comfort once broken is is legendary and they gave a habit of lasting for years.

Saddle comfort has always been the limiting factor in my ability to ride longer distances, and I’d tried all kinds of saddles made from synthetics and gels etc, but 8-10 miles was enough to have me wishing it was over. Overall, I’ve almost certainly spent more on inferior saddles than I would have spent if I’d just bought a Brooks in the first place!

My saddle was supplied without any Proofide, which was an inconvenience because you have to treat the leather prior to use. I believe that once upon a time they were supplied with a small sachet of it so you could use it straight away, but sadly this no longer appears to be the case. However, once I’d sorted some, it was applied over the underside of the saddle and left whilst the top was also treated but then polished off as directed.

A quick try in the garden wasn’t very promising, as the surface of the saddle was super slippery. I knew this wasn’t down to the Proofide, as I had also given it a quick try whilst waiting for the Proofide to be delivered. A quick internet search later, and it would seem that saddle angle is super critical - my fault for not checking this properly first and just doing it by eye. I adjusted the saddle with a spirit level to get it completely horizontal and tried again. Perfect this time, and the slippery feel was no longer an issue.

I took the bike out for a quick shakedown ride, as I’d also fitted an adjustable stem and made a few other adjustments so I was carrying a few tools. 16 miles later, I remembered I’d told the wife I’d be back in a few minute . . . oops! Now, bearing in mind this saddle has by no means been broken in, the fact that I’ve instantly been stable to double my time in the saddle instantly bodes very well for the future, but I’m more than happy with my purchase.

I just have two negative points to make.

1. A sachet of Proofide included would be a welcome touch
2. Quality control could be improved upon. The rivets have been poorly finished, especially on the underside and the top of the saddle was marked

Neither of these are a deal breaker, but a little disappointing on a premium product.
Would I buy it again? Sure, but I really don’t think I’ll ever need to.

Still trying to break it in

It's hard as a rock coming out of the box. I soaked my saddle with the recommended proofide on both sides everyday for a week and kept it in a plastic bag with a cup of water. The water would dissapear for the first two days and was soaked up into the saddle leather. Then I just kept it covered in proofide for a week and didn't buff it out. It helped a lot but it's still on the hard side, so I assume in probably 5 more long rides it should break in.

If I have to ride it for a very long time, I've been using padded underwear, but I'm trying to not use those all the time so my natural sit bones will ultimately form in the saddle. Still waiting though. But, I definitely recommend using a LOT of proofide the first week and let it soak in for a week before using it because it will soak it up and any humidity too.

Das Braun sieht nach der ersten Fettung noch schicker aus und wird dem Bild oben nicht gerecht. Die Struktur des Leders kommt nach einer Nacht einwirken lassen erst richtig zur Geltung. Nach dem Polieren glänzt einem das gute Stück nur so an. In Verbindung mit dem Chrom Untergestell wirklich ein Hingucker (wenn der Sattel dann auch noch auf einer silbernen Sattelstange sitzt). Ber Standard B17 hat da nur ein langweiliges schwarzezs Untergestell. Die Möglichkeit durch den Sattel schauen zu können ist ein nettes Feature (und soll den Dammbereich entlasten). Der Ausschnitt macht den Brooks auch etwas flexibler im Vergleich zum Standard B17.
In schwarz hätte ich mir dieses Modell glaube ich nicht holen wollen, da er irgendwie langweilig aussieht. Erworben habe ich meinen Brooks für 75 €.

Jetzt aber zu meinen Kritikpunkten:
1. Die Nieten sind nicht im Leder versenkt und zum Teil schräge eingestanzt. Zwei der Nieten stehen bei mir heraus und scheuern an der Hose. Ein Sattel der meine Hosen zerstört ist leider ein No Go!
2. Die Nieten sind nicht rund poliert und haben auf der Oberseite eine spührbare scharfe Kante. Ich verstehe nicht, dass mit einem nahe zu seit 100 Jahren unveränderten Prudukt geworben wird....dies sollte dringlichst nachgebessert werden in der Fertigung. Mir ist das sofort aufgefallen und wäre ich dort in der Produktüberwachung, würde ich diese Nieten überarbeiten lassen. Bei zwei verschiedenen Hosen von mir habe ich nach nur zwei Touren a 23 km eine sichtbare Stelle von der Niete rechts außen. Ich musste vorsichtig mit einer Feile die Kante (Grad) weg schleifen...der heilige Gral muss also selbest nachbearbeitet werden...wieder ein No Go!

Einen weiteren Sattel dieser Marke werde ich mir vorerst nicht kaufen. Schaut man z.B. auf die Nieten der "Gyes" Ledersättel, sieht man das es anders auch geht. Müssen also nicht gleich von Hand gehämmerte Kupfernieten sein.
Ob mein Nachbearbeiten der zwei rechten Nieten geholfen hat, wird der Langzeittest zeigen. Auch wie sich die Sitzqualität nach dem "Einbrechen" des Sattels verändern wird, wird sich zeigen. Unbequem finde ich ihn nicht, hart ja. An das glatte Leder muss man sich gewöhnen und der Sattel muss richtig eingestellt werden, um nicht nach vorne oder hinten zu rutschen. Weiter Vorteil des Schlitzes ist nicht nur die Entlastung und eine Elastizität des Leders von Anfang an, sondern eine gute Belüftung von unten. Die drei Löcher im B17 sind da wohl eher gut gemeint als wirklich funktional.

Irgendwie schade, dass er nicht perfekt ist. Der erste Brooks sollte schon etwas besonderes sein...so leider keine 5 Sterne.
Nachtrag:
Sollten Sie den Sattel auf einem Rennrad oder Singlespeed montiert haben (Sitzposition weniger als 60 Grad), in Verbindung mit schmalen Reifen 6-7 Bar, ist der Sattel für Leute die einmal Probleme mit der Bandscheibe hatten mit vorsicht zu genießen. Ich rate zu einer gefederten Sattelstützen oder einem Brooks mit Federn.
Der ungefederte Sattel gibt Stöße und harte Vibrationen 1:1 an den Rücken weiter und bei nach vorn geneigter Sitzhaltung geht das auf die Bandscheiben!
Auf glatten, ebenen Asphalt gibt es keine Probleme.

Nachtrag2, 08/2022, ich erhöhe von 3 auf 4 Sterne:
Das Bearbeiten der Nieten war erfolgreich und ich hatte keine weiteren Abreibungen an einer Hose. Es ist jedoch echtes Fingerspitzengefühl nötig, damit das Leder nicht beschädigt wird. Ich habe dazu einen Beistift genommen und diesen mit 240er Schleifpapier umwickelt. So hat man einen geraden Zug und kann fein arbeiten mit Blick von der Seite (sehr flacher Winkel beim Schleifen).
Ich fahre den Sattel nun gute 2 Jahre und bin, was den Fahrkomfort angeht sehr positiv überascht. Ich habe ihn noch nicht nachspannen müssen und nur je ein Mal im Jahr von unten gefettet...das sollte auf gar keinen Fall öfter gemacht werden, da das Leder sonst zu schnell weich wird und absackt. Der B17 Imperial kann nicht so intensiv gespannt werden wie der normale...er bricht auch nicht so ein wie der normale B17, der Imperial ist von Haus aus schon leicht elastisch. Also Vorsicht beim Fetten! Fasst das Leder an und fühlt ob es zu trocken ist.
Das Fahren ist super, um so länger du drauf sitzt, desto besser wird er durch die Wärme...eher werden mir jetzt die Hände taub, als das mir der Hintern weh tut!

The saddle is hard like a piece of wood. Rode for about an hour with wax treatment, no issues. It wasn't uncomfortable but it wasn't comfortable either. I know these take thousands of km to break in.

edit: Even without breaking in saddle works quite well, don't notice it on longer rides.

Ich konnte nur 4 Sterne vergeben weil der Sattel umgetauscht werden musste (was keine Probleme bereitete) aber das es eine Notwendigkeit gab zeugt davon das die Qualitätskontrolle in dem Fall nicht funktionierte
Das Sattelleder war schief auf dem Gestell aufgelistet,und der Abstand der Schienen war zu gering.

How to soften up your saddle without riding on it.

I had a Books B17 saddle back when I was much younger, and I thought it never really broke in. I just ordered another one, and I came up with a great way to break it in before you even put it on your bike. I just opened it 20 minutes ago, it was hard as a rock. Now it feels very soft and supple, and I am going to put it on and try it. It is already noticiablly softer... and it has only been 20 minutes... I probably would have had to ride 1000 miles to get the same effect.

Here is what you do:

Disclaimer: I weigh 175 lbs, so if you weigh way more than that or way less, adjust accordingly, or find a friend who weighs 175 to do it for you.

I don't know why I didn't think of this back when I had my last one... The saddle is totally soft now, and it is such an obvious idea...

Its simple...

Take the saddle and place it on the floor upright, on carpet or a rug.

I am wearing tennis shoes, and it didn't make marks, it did stretch it out and there are stretch marks on the leather, but I don't care about that. I don't want to worship this thing, I just want to sit on it and have it be comfortable... It is going to be up my *** anyway, so why worship it.... lol.

What you do, is put it on the floor, and put one foot on the saddle, and then put PART OF your weight on it in 1 second intervals to stretch out the leather. Do it maybe 10 times, then feel it to see how noticably softer it is getting. DO NOT STOMP ON IT (although if you have been trying to use your *** to break it in, you might feel like doing that!!) Just GENTLY put some weight on it and stretch out the leather. I probably put 75% of my weight on it. You will feel the leather stretching, and dont worry, there is a bolt on the bottom to tighten up the leather if you miss the extreme pain... ;)

If you want it softer, do it a few more times... Repeat until it is soft enough for you. It totally makes it softer. Saving your behind a lot of unnecessary pain... Let your foot do the work.

Now I am going to put some proofhide on it and then put it on and try it out. If it still hurts, I am going to repeat this process. It is like 100% softer than it was 20 minutes ago.

Dont stomp on it, just gently put your weight on it all over it for 1 second and then take the weight off, and repeat.. move your foot around and stretch out the whole seat until it feels right for you.

Actually, I ended up slathering it with proofhide and baking it at 150 degrees for 15 minutes. Worked like a charm. It soaks the proofhide right into the leather because it opens up the pores.

Just google "Baking Brooks Saddle", and the article will come up. It really works. It was super soft the first time I rode it..

I actually baked it 2x and put the entire 40g tin of proofhide in it before riding it... It made it super soft.
