How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we do not use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

2.0 out of 5 stars "MAX" button only pauses display. Quickly needs (factory) calibration.

I purchased a Sensorcon CO Inspector as an occasional-use monitoring device. While I cannot speak to the accuracy of the CO detection, I can say that the feature I purchased it for is not accurately represented.

I have discovered the "MAX" button only freezes the display at the moment it is pressed. There is NO MEMORY on this device. It can only show the immediate reading. The "MAX" button would be more accurately labelled "HOLD", but unfortunately there is a "HOLD" indicator on the display that appears when powering off or calibration operations.

The tiny manual shows a diagram with feature descriptions. The "MAX" button is described, "Press to make the LCD remain at the Maximum CO concentration measured." On the reverse side of the page, under "How to Operate the CO Inspector:", step 2 is "To display only the maximum concentration measured simply press MAX to hold the maximum value." Pressing again resumes real time measurement.

These descriptions are at best very misleading. This might even be considered completely false.

I reached my own conclusions after wondering why I always got "0" when pressing the MAX button, even after a couple events where I witnessed the display indicate values up to "12". The device was continuously powered on. The battery was charged (ie. low battery indicator was NOT on).

Assuming it is calibrated and working correctly, this device is really useful for placement in or wearing while in a location that may have a CO leak. In theory, the device will alert you to high or unsafe levels giving you time to get out. I experienced the alarm and lights when my sensor started over-reacting within 6 months. The alarm and lights are rather effective and would be sure to get attention.

However, in one particular incident with the Sensorcon, there were 2 other consumer home CO detectors in the area (each a different make/model). The Sensorcon quickly rose above "70" PPM in varying locations while the consumer units each displayed "0" and never sounded their alarm. To be fair, consumer home CO detectors are usually set to alarm if readings reach 70 PPM for an hour or more. However their displays can show readings above 30. This never happened. Unfortunately it caused great stress and had us opening all the windows for hours after nightfall.

In this event, I finally turned off the Sensorcon after 1-2 hours of muting the alarm and took it to a friends's house over 40 miles away. On arrival, I turned the device back on outside and entered their house only to get readings up around 40 PPM. This location has never shown a CO reading before or since. They had only one gas device: a 2 year old water heater in the separated garage.

My device clearly needs calibration after very little use time. It has been kept in its sealed bag and stored away from heat and cold and sunlight. It was used practically only 10-20 times (vs. just powering on for a quick check and back off) for a maximum of no more than 24-48 hours total. I have kept it clean and undamaged.

Very disillusioned with this product. (purchased new Dec. 2016)

Total failure with 35-70 ppm readings outside after 6 months. Not fun to have extremely false readings on the job.

Not waterproof in my experience. Stopped working when it got wet in the rain so I had to return before getting to use it very much.
