I am bake quite regularly for fun and like many have been frustrated by the dreaded doming effect. I've tried hollowing the middle out and made my own strips from old tea towels but they were very fiddly to pin in place. Eventually, I've decided to give these a go. They are quite large when attached (2 strips) and easily cover an 8" tin with lots of spare so I reckon would go up to 9-10". These are a little stiff and fiddly the first use until you get the knack of it. Damp them down and tighten on your cake tin and they are good to go. I've used over a spring form tin and they work fine on these. I have now baked about 3-4 cakes using these. Often using a recipe I've used before that domed despite my best efforts to prevent it and each time they cake has come out flat. Yes there might be a bit of cracking but that is often the case but no dome and a nice flat top with non of the usually trimming needed. I usually combat any cracking by flipping the cake anyhow but upon doing so the cake has been totally level ready for decorating. I tend to decorate with fondant so a flat top is essential. I've been impressed with these strips and would definitely recommend as they cut out any messing and trimming which can lead to over trimming of you don't get it right first time!
I have cooked many, many cakes and whilst I would like to say that I waste a lot by cutting them level I do not. because what actually happens is I eat the pieces I cut off. which is not really a problem for me but when I have to cut a cake at its lowest point to level it off I often have to bake an extra sponge to get the desired height in a complete cake. was sceptical of these strips as some of the reviews were less than complimentary but had to try them for myself, and I must say I was very impressed. I let them soak for a good 30 minutes then fastened them to the tin (you can connect several together for larger bakes if required). I sat nervously watching through the oven door as the cake evenly rose to a height I have only previously wished for. the strips do brown slightly after a couple of uses, but then you are putting something wet into a hot oven and that's what happens. regardless, there is no sign of them falling apart and the discolouration doesn't affect their functionality at all. the only downside is I now have less spare cake to eat!
I bought these to bake my Dad's birthday cake and having baked cakes before, always getting that awful domed effect, I wanted to stop that happening. THESE DO NOT WORK. Both cake pans came out of the oven with domed tops and uneven, despite the batter being even when put in the oven. The packet I received also looked supiciously FAKE with a yellow Wilton logo as opposed to the one pictured on this page. REALLY ANGRY as I have wasted money and also have domed cakes. Do it yourself instead with soaked kitchen towel wrapped in foil and then wrapped around the cake pans. THESE WILL WASTE YOUR MONEY.
Expensive for what it is but I must admit... they do work! It’s very easy to use, although I mostly use it on my 7” sandwich tins it can certainly accommodate larger sized cakes. No doming or cracking for me, although I have only made Victorian sandwich and coffee walnut cake so far.
Honestly will never bake without these now. Every cake is level and moist without the crispy edge I used to get. Helps with getting a smooth finish as I'm not trimming bits of my sponge. Definitely stress free baking too as my cakes are never wonky anymore.
Great value as they're reusable and I can see mine lasting for a long while. I've already baked 20 sponges and they're as good as new.
I’m still getting used to baking with cake strips. The first time I used them the cake still had a done but I soon realised it was because I had placed them too low on the tin. Since moving them higher I’m getting much flatter tops which is great, I also find my cakes are coming out more moist and springy which is great. They are a little fiddly to attach to spring form tins (which are always my tins of choice) but the results are worth it. I’ve marked only one star for flavour as these are not an edible product... I would recommend this product for anyone who regularly bakes layered cakes.
Love, love, love this item!! Had a new oven whilst testing these strips on a rough sample cake I threw together. I didn't know if it would work cos of couple of reviews. These worked incredibly well. It was spongy, moist & level and not much crust, just where I didn't wipe tipped mixture on one side prior to baking. Now ordered two more for my proper layered cake, can't wait, Tip; do soak strips for 5 mins and secure flush around tin.. Happy baking!!!
Update: I purchased the long baking strips and am pretty satisfied with the quality and how well the product works.
The product itself is decently priced but the issue was I did not read the description carefully enough and I thought the package contained six long strips instead of it having three different sized baking strips. So be careful not to make the same mistake.
Easy to use. Read the instructions as I didn't then when I did I realised why I was struggling. I was using a 10" square tin and instructions only mention round. For the larger tins you just attach together. Now I know why I was struggling to get round the corners but looking at my cake it came out totally flat so I'd say it still worked so all good.
