Tried this on a blind tasting event with tepid water and it instantly converted me. Very rich and complex and not over sweet: this is very different to other pineapple rums and works best as a luxury short with a dash or two of tepid water added to release the bouquet and layers of flavour. Unlike many pineapple varieties it is not overpowering and sickly: it is more nuanced and special. If you like with Pepsi, Jamaica cove is more suited and copes better with the pollutant to give a pleasant sweeter pineapply drink. Stiggins is a luxury treat and is expensive but worth the outlay if you want something rewarding as a late evening finisher. We’ve bought this several times as there’s nothing like it, but happily it was out of stock one day and we tried the Plantation’s Dark Rum instead at half Stiggins Fancy price and that turned out to be our favourite rum ever and one of our top drinks of the year. We keep a Stiggins in stock but now drink 4 dark to one Stiggins as it is really special at a bargain price. Both are recommended highly: perhaps try Jamaica Cove Pineapple if you like with cola: we buy that too. All excellent.
Most of the time quoted flavours on spirits refer to slightly noticeable tastes. Not this time. From the minute you open the bottle the smell hits you, and it sticks around on the palate as well as in the finish. At first tasting I found it a bit overwhelming, although upon returning it's quite pleasant indeed. Sticking it in the fridge before drinking pulls the flavour back in a bit and makes it less dominating, I'm yet to try it warm as suggested on the bottle though. All in all a very nice spirit, and something very different from your everyday rums and whisky's. I will definitely be buying this again.
Extra note, left a dram of this on my desk while I was working and over the course of half an hour managed to catch several fruit flies. Gives it a bit of a double purpose. Would recommend watching your drink carefully if there are any about though, or you may end up with a tad more protein than you bargained for. In the end it's just a testament to the funky fruitiness of the rum.
