5.0 out of 5 stars Download driver from Kensington first

Not recognize by Windows 10 immediately. Will need to download and install the drivers from Kensington first. Once installed, shutdown PC, insert in the Fingerprint Key Reader and reboot. It would take like a short while to locate and install the hardware. Once installed, you should see it appearing in the Management Panel.

Works very well with Windows 10. Installation is straightforward. Just have to scan my fingerprints which takes awhile.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great when it works, but beware the reaper!

When it works it’s great. It works almost all the time. But it also bricked the MBR on a laptop PC and destroyed a Mac I tried to test it out on - again corrupting the boot sector on the drive forcing a full reinstall. So it wiped a Dell Latitude and a MacBook Air. A great idea but I just can’t recommend a product that was instrumental in causing two separate computers to need full rebuilds. YMMV but for me I lost hours correcting for this thing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good concept but not much support.

Good size and feels quality but useless when it comes to Windows login and online 2FA support.

There is no point in using this for logging into Windows since the local password option is still available and is so easily hacked, however, this is a Microsoft issue and the fingerprint sensor works flawlessly for this.

My biggest gripe is that even though its meant to support FIDO U2F, not many compliant websites will support this FP scanner. It works for Lastpass but only if its the only 2FA method available (which again is not Kingstons fault) but more importantly to me just switching to Bitwarden and paying for the subscription which adds FIDO U2F support so that I could use this FP scanner, it won't recognise it in Brave browser or Firefox. Should come with a software suite like UbiKey that would probably fix these issues.

I want to try the VeriMark IT version to see if that's any better but chances are it wont be.

All that said, remember that your eyes and your fingerprints and not changeable, if the metadata of these stored online are compromised, that's your biometric security out the window.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do what it implies

Wonderful for signing into Windows but that's all it does. I spent ages trying to find out how to make it work with Chrome and other software but there is no support or instructions other than very basic instructions on a business card sized sheet which a baby could sort out anyway. Also their website which has a link to 'manual' merely takes you to a sales brochure. ABSOLUTE RUBBISH

1.0 out of 5 stars would not work with Win10, Kensington was aware but wasn't bothered about it. Returned.

I could not get this device to work with Windows 10. When I contacted customer support, they were aware of it but could not provide an estimate when a fix was available. When I researched the issue, it appeared to exist for months already. Shockingly Kensington still markets this device.

Also, whilst most other devices work out of the box, this one needs drivers installed. One would hope a brand like Kensington (using Synaptics technology) would provide drivers through Windows Update.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Fingerprints are your keys to login
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 August 2018

This Kensington works well and i have it attached to my keyboard that has a pass though usb port. I have tested it both on Windows 7 and Windows 10 and it works fine. There is times Windows complains about not finding the fingerprint on file but you retouch it and it finds it. the Size of it would allow you to attach it to a laptop or a windows tablet computer to get Windows Hello login.

The only down side to it so far is Password Manager indication (but this is may be an issue for the Password manager Vendor to resolve). I previously had a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader back in the day on my desktop computer that Microsoft no longer offered Software drivers for Windows 7 or 10. This had a password manager indicated.

From what I can see there is a couple of password managers the Kensington supports LassPass to name one. However I use 1Password which isnt on the supported list yet. But this may be an issue for 1Password to resolve in updating there software to work with the Kensington.

Either way its a quick device to install and configure and would recommend it to anyone who wishes to be "secure" but gets abit annoyed at entering passwords all the time :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Was great, then variable, then rubbish

I bought it to use mainly to unlock my laptop with Windows Hello and to use with some Windows password manager apps.

Initially it worked ok and was quite fast. I was quite happy with it.

Then it started working intermittently and a small piece of the rim fell off but it was working 8 times out of ten.

Then 3 months later a large piece of the housing came away and it started randomly not recognising any fingerprints.

It was then working very poorly and I gave up on it. I bought two of these but I wish I hadn't. The second one is in place now so we'll see how long it lasts...

Intermittently not recognising any of my 8 registered fingerprints then recognises them perfectly...infuriating!🤬

02/01/21
Same problems as the first one. Gave up and replaced this second Kensington Verish*t fingerprint reader with a much cheaper one from Arcanite.

The Arcanite reader is working perfectly nearly a year later.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works about 2 times in 3; plastic surround flimsy.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2021

This reader installed easily and was recognised by Windows. I then spent quite a while enrolling my fingerprints - it insists on getting every part of the finger. Disappointingly, once it's up and running, it won't recognise my fingers unless they're positioned 'just so'; all that scanning the whole fingertip seems to have been pointless. Recognition works about 2 times in 3, or not at all if the finger is a bit crinkly from washing, a bit dusty, etc etc.
The plastic outer surround slides back and forth a bit; not sure why. It broke within a week on the side of my laptop, but thankfully doesn't seem to affect the working of the reader.

Not as impressed as I hoped to be. The fingerprint recognition on my cheap mobile phone is way more effective and reliable.
