4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best scotch whiskies I have ever had.

Fantastic to drink either on its own or when mixing with coca cola. I would definitely get it again as the manufacturers have done really well to make this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very unusual single malt
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 26 September 2018
I don't really "speak whisky", so this review will be written in layperson's language.

The Jura 7 wood single malt is reportedly aged in a range of barrels made from different woods, hence the name, and this is intended to give it a distinctive taste. I was very pleasantly surprised by this whisky, having read some indifferent reviews online before trying it.

There is a certain sweetness to the taste, initially, and then a more complex taste follows. I couldn't pinpoint the seven wood types, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - unless you are looking for a particular woody character in your dram. The after-taste is very pleasant and lingers in the throat quite nicely.

I would recommend - if possible - trying a measure of this in a bar before splashing out on a whole bottle. It is very Marmite-y (without tasting remotely of Marmite, of course), in that it will divide opinion quite markedly. A whisky with a personality that you'll either love or loathe. I love it, and find myself returning to this bottle whenever a tot of whisky is called for.

The presentation box and bottle are very attractive as well - again, that may or may not be important to you. It would make a nice gift, as long as you knew the person you were buying it for, and their taste in whisky.

E. L. Wisty
4.0 out of 5 stars A very different Jura to what I have experienced before
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 11 September 2018
If I had ever compiled a ranking of single malts, Jura would have come very near or at the bottom. To my taste it always seemed to have much too much of a marine quality for my liking - seawater, seaweed, iodine, as though the 'terroir' of the coastline infused it to an extent that just isn't present in most other Islay and island whiskies (with the exception of Bunnahabhain which also seems to present this marine quality and would also have been very near the bottom of my list). I still have an unfinished bottle of Jura Superstition lurking in the back of the drinks cabinet which Mrs E. L. Wisty, bless 'er, bought me for my birthday two or three years ago.

This however is a very different beast and a pleasant surprise indeed. Smooth, with caramel and the faintest tinge of flavours of chocolate and coffee, a whisper of smoke, and a long finish. I don't seem to be getting the sherry from the finishing casks sadly. I did find that if left in the glass too long it does seem to noticeably develop a bit of the iodine quality which afflicted the earlier Juras - don't neck it, but in savouring it don't leave it too long either; pour a single and then another single later rather than a double straight off would be my recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely balanced
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 21 September 2018
With anything you consume, taste is always going to be subjective and what works for one may not necessarily work for another. I have always found that whisky is one of those drinks that can divide opinion quite significantly, but I have to say that this Jura12 year old has both me and my friends mostly in agreement.

First up, the flavours and I was certainly getting a hint of coffee and chocolate but only fleetingly so. The more pronounced flavour for me was walnuts, and old walnuts at that, not in an unpleasant way mind but that I kept being reminded of old furniture when sipping this. The one thing I did find was a lovely balance between the sweet and then the smokey aftertaste. Why not five stars, well as I said taste is subjective and while it's a pleasant example of the whisky craft, it's not among my favourites. That said, this is definitely one that I’d be happy to offer my more discerning whisky drinking friends, and I’ll also be happy to replace it with more of the same when it runs out, which is as good a recommendation as I can give.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jura 12 Year Old Whisky
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 8 September 2018
I was intrigued to try this as it’s been a long time since I last tried Western Isles whisky (for good reason…) the last one I bought was a multi-award winning, so I figured I had to try it… and it was disgusting; it was so overpoweringly smoky it was like licking the bottom of a dirty ashtray. I couldn’t figure out what those judges must have been, year after year! …and those were in the days I smoked cigarettes.

Hence, I had a little trepidation in ordering this and I’m very happy to say the smokiness is barely noticeable and even then it’s only a an aftertaste.

As for the rest of the overall flavour, it’s quite a light malt and I would have preferred it the sherry notes had a more noticeable flavour, I still think I have a taste preference for the Highland or Speyside whiskys but this is okay too.

The cork-top bottle looks great and it’s nicely presented in its card and tin topped and bottomed packaging, so it won’t be out of place if given as a gift.
