I thought these bags would be great for sous vide, so I decided to do a $100 worth of beef tenderloin in an XL bag. I sealed it, pumped the air out to vacuum it and threw it in my sous vide. When I took it out, the bag was filled with water. The vacuum seal (sticker) was off and the bag let water in. Ruined my steak, and may have damaged my Anova. I am extremely upset about this purchase, Worst cooking product I’ve ever bought anywhere.
They will not replace a vacuum sealer. I thought that they would be a bit heavier. They do vacuum seal but not all are created equally. First time use they work great, not so much second time with some of them then they become really expensive zip lock bags. I’m a bit nervous to use them for sous vide because I done want to ruin my meat if they leak. I have used them clipped to the side of my sous vide container and the lid fits perfectly over them but I wouldn’t just throw them in, unless you have a rack. They are great for storing food and they have kept their vacuum in my freezer. I’m sure they are better than others out there but I wouldnt purchase them again for sous vide
These bags are great. The vacuum sealer is easy to use. The bags are perfect for sous vide cooking. They easily invert for purposes of cleaning and are thick enough that they will then stand on their own to dry (e.g., sitting on a towel). The bags are also excellent for food storage. Where I had used plain old ziplock bags for freezing in the past, the thawed food would always *look* like it had been frozen. Using the Sous Bear bags, the thawed food looks like it did before it went into the freezer -- much more appetizing, and I expect more flavourful as well. Add to that the benefits of using reusable bags instead of disposable vacuum bags, and you have yourself a great little product. Highly recommended.
I had purchased this hoping to avoid the use of so many ziplock when working with sous vide but they are very hard to clean when cooking meats. The instructions says to put meat in a ziplock first and THEN the ziplock in the sous bear bag for cooking... but for storing cheese and other things than meat they work well. If they rounded the corners of the bag it would help for cleaning. Do not put them the dishwasher not even to rack!! The valve came off when I tried
As a novice in vacuum storage and souse vide cooking I purchased these bags for both of these purposes. Being reusable was a big plus. I have tried the bags for vacuum storage so far, and all worked as expected. The plastic pump provided a high vacuum, although it took a bit of fiddling to get the vacuuming started. I experimented with one bag, sealing, vacuuming, and opening the bag several times (with a dry item in the bag) to see if the bag would hold up to multiple uses. It held up well. The seller provided 10 additional air valves, but no instruction as to their purpose. One niggling comment: I was hoping the bags would be compatible with my vacuum sealer machine. I have a GERYON Vacuum Sealer Machine, and was hoping to use it to vacuum the bags. Maybe an adapter could be designed and provided in the future??
Just received the bags after they were unavailable for a while. There is a manufacturing fault wich makes impossible to extract the air out the bag without a little modification. The little wavy lines you see on the surface of the air valve is where the air is supposed to come out of the bag. But they are sealed. I have had to open them up by using an exacto knife and slicing between the two layers of plastic of the air valve. Not very convivial.
the first review i gave these was not very complimentary, because i could not get a lot of these bags to reseal. problem i believe solved. when you open these bags, the release of pressure sometimes moves the little plastic seal causing it to crinkle. rubbing a finger over it gently to flatten it out again seems to solve the problem. they work really well, and cutting waste is a good thing. highly recommend.
I just received my Sousbear package today, and I have to say that I am impressed!!! I’ve already used it successfully.
Let me first say that I have a sous vide machine, but this isn’t what I bought these bags for. Strictly food storage for me.
Using the pump with the bags at first was a bit tricky. I thought if I pushed too hard that I wouldn’t be able to get any air out of the bag, but it worked with some trial and error. You can push on a flat surface and the air still comes out. But it wasn’t working every time for me.
I had the brilliant idea to try to connect the suction cup to my vacuum sealer attachment, it didn’t work out as easily as pumping yourself. So this is a great little gadget!! I will be trying this again with the vacuum sealer though. 😉
30 bags is a lot, and I’m happy about that! I know it’s a lot, because I had to wash them all before first use. It took a minute, but now I’m good to go moving forward. The bags seem to be durable. But only time will tell.
I am not writing this review for anything other than the fact that I know I will enjoy using this product moving forward. It’s a great money saver in my opinion. Less food spoilage!!! I’ve just changed my diet to vegan, so it will save me a lot of money!!! Thank you!!!
Arrived quickly and as advertised. I work away from home so I food prep on the weekend. These are exactly what I've been looking for. Likes- reusable, vacuum seal, bags feel durable, good variety of sizes to choose. Dislikes - The seal is "ok" . It seems the flatter you can get the food the better the seal will last. I tried a lime for the heck of it but the seal wouldn't hold. A larger pump would be nice. It's a good workout sealing up meal bags for 4 days away. I'd love to see an electric pump option to make batch sealing go a little easier. All in all it's an innovative product and I love the idea of reducing single use plastics. Even if we use them twice we've cut plastic use in half. I like to think of it that way
Pros: -Very easy to use, much easier then using a vacuum sealer. -Good to use as freezer bags, the sealing and air removal helps prevent freezer burn.
Cons: -Used a bag once for sous-vide, attempted to use a second time and water leaked in. -Very difficult to wash, tough to get residue from cooking out of the bag. -You do lose part of the bag capacity for keeping the valve clear.
I wanted to like these, and I think they are good for some things. Might be reusable as long as you don't cook in them or use it for anything that will leave a residue, and might be easy enough to clean if you don't have cooked on residue from sous-vide. I did buy it specifically for sous-vide, so I probably won't be re-purchasing as these are expensive for essentially non-reusable sous-vide bags.
