I’ve been using a few Slice products for about a year and absolutely love them so I pretty much buy any new product I see! This is one of my newest and one of my favorites! I honestly just bought it because I thought it looked cool but now I don’t know what I ever did without it! It’s smaller than I expected (It’s tiny - which I love) but surprisingly heavy for its size (in a good way) and even more surprisingly effective! My husband (who wasn’t quite as impressed with other Slice products I have) compared it with his brand new (regular pocket) knife and my little Slice knife honestly sliced through cardboard boxes (and everything else he tried it on) better than his knife! He’s not easily impressed so, nice job Slice! I use it literally all day for everything and couldn’t be happier with this purchase! I’m sure I’ll be buying another one soon!
I've used slice blades for several years and as a blind individual, I feel much more comfortable with slice blades than the typical metal blades that are much sharper. I've never had a problem with cutting down boxes with the slice pens. My only complaints with this knife so far are:
1) The packaging is a little rough to get into. The packaging for the replacement blades has a pre-scored flap on the back to get into the blades but this knife does not. You need a knife to get access to your new knife.
2) The overall size is too small if you have large hands. Something a little longer would make it feel more stable when cutting. I've also ordered the utility knife which I'm hoping will be a little better for every day carry. This little one will end up stashed in a go-kit instead.
The ease of switching out blades without tools is greatly appreciated. When I first bought a slice pen, it wasn't until a few years later that I even knew you could quickly swap out blades on them.
This little thing is amazing! The blades are true in that they feel lick a extremely dull blade to the skin, but will slice almost any basic packaging. I did notice you should cut against a solid surface for a clean cut. This knife is tiny too. No like real tiny, but powerful. It’s quality it very premium. It feels very nice in the hand.
Note: This knife requires no oiling. The most upkeep you may need is to clean the blade itself from time to time and after a while to replace it.
I open a lot of boxes (mostly from Amazon, lol!). Typically I use a standard box cutter or a small kitchen knife. This looked interesting so I thought I would try it out. The ceramic blade is supposed to be much safer than a standard box cutter or knife, and 11X more long-lasting.
Keep in mind I am rating this based on the blade they sent it with - which is a rounded blade. I understand that this knife accepts a compatible pointed-tip blade, which might be better for my needs.
Pros: - It's very small and compact, and extremely light
- The ceramic blade is safer for fingers, has a rounded tip, and is hard to cut yourself with
- It folds and is easy to carry
Cons: - The rounded ceramic blade is not that sharp. It takes a bit more effort to cut boxes open, especially if the boxes are closed by paper tape. Plastic tape ends up being easier to cut.
- The blade is way smaller than a standard box cutter blade, which again requires moire effort to use
- I cannot use the flat of the ceramic blade (because it's so small, and the rounded tip) to pull off address labels from the box, as I can with either a knife or box cutter. Hence, I have to put this down after cutting and pick up a small knife to pry the labels off the box.
As I said, I might do better with the pointed-tip ceramic blade, I will have to try that. For now, I am finding this somewhat useful but not particularly satisfying to work with.

Safer, But Has A Very Small Blade That Is Not That Sharp

So, this is a pretty ingenious cutting system. It used ceramic blades, and you can run your finger right across the blade in the same direction of the blade without cutting your skin.
I think you could actually trust kids about 8 to use this to cut boxes and things for a craft project with this.
However, it cuts and opens boxes well. You can easily cut cardboard with this knife.
the body is all metal and has a solid feel. It folds up very tiny. It is small enough to be a every day carry in your pocket. Especially if you are someone that opens a lot of cardboard boxes like someone who works in retail stocking shelves, or in a warehouse...
This knife is safer than even the sharp knives provided by stores to open merchandise boxes that have depth stops on them.
I did try cutting rope with this, and it just won't do it. If it functioned more like a standard blade that can cut things like rope, or seat belts in your car in an emergency, I would say for sure that this would absolutely be an every day carry.
I already carry a leatherman, but if I didn't, I would carry this as a safety tool. It really is just that good.
It has a very solid well built feel to it, with a good locking mechanism.
The blade is very easy to change without tools, and you push the button and it slides right out. I wish it shipped with a blade that has a blunt tip on one end, and a pointed tip on the other.
This did not loose any stars for usefulness(like cutting rope and other things) just because it is so unique! I wonder if metal blades will fit into this device.
Better yet would be if they made sharp ceramic blades. Otherwise, this is totally awesome, and I am very surprised by the quality!
I have utility knives all over my house and have a small collection of other knives from Victorinox, Leatherman, Kershaw, and SOG. I was intrigued by the Slice knife and its ceramic blade, so I decided to give it a try. The EDC folding knife has great build quality and the blade does a good job of cutting certain materials with some force, but it won't replace my Leatherman as my EDC knife. For breaking down a lot of boxes, I also think a regular old utility knife is better. That being said, if you're opening up packages from Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, etc., the Slice blade is perfectly fine and much safer. I liked the blade so much, that I decided to order the "Pen Cutter" from Slice, specifically for opening packages. I would've just used the EDC knife for that, but it's kind of small and awkard for frequent use. Plus, I wanted a knife with a plastic housing to resist as much corrosion as possible. Since the ceramic blades don't rust, I figured the "Pen Cutter" would take to being wiped down beter than a metal blade and body. Still, I think the Slice EDC is a pretty cool knife and a great addition to my collection.
I was rather skeptical of how that little blade would work, but man does it cut! And it's safe for your fingers unlike a regular box cutter. Plus, this is a tiny little thing compared to a typical box cutter. The only shortcoming I can see is that my regular box cutter has a button I push to close the section that houses the blade, then press the button and it pops open. This one will close but it is very manual plus there are no instructions on how to close it. I figured out that I have to put my finger into the slot that holds the folded section and move the spring loaded piece of metal that holds it open. Once I've pulled the metal piece so that it is against one side, I can slide the blade section closed. Also, if they had included a thin cable with this, it would be a great addition to your keychain. It isn't all that heavy and would be easy to find each time you needed it if it was on your keychain...
I really wanted to like this product a lot because it is newer, different, and has a good grip and design...but it just doesn't cut the proverbial "mustard" for me. It is great for things like boxes and opening them/breaking them down but it is not super effective for a lot of the same things that a steel knife with a similar MSRP can do. Something this is that steel is not is safer. This is a MUCH safer blade and for employees in a warehouse or maybe younger folks that need to use a knife, this would probably excel. That said, in some individual use cases (like mine), this is just lacking for the total cost; in my own subjective opinion. The fact remains that you might have to purchase replacement blades for this as well; depending on how much you cut. I do have to give some credit to this blade because I was breaking down a box and the blade slipped and hopped off the cardboard and it hit my skin but did not break it...a steel knife would've definitely given me a cut I would not have soon forgotten. This is advantageous in that aspect and I think it has a lot of use in that type of situation...it just isn't what I thought it was and is lacking for me only. Everyone is different so I am sure this is an awesome knife for people; depending on what they want and need.
Pros:
Built well Easy to open/close Blade is sharp but safe (much safer) Looks nice Good for things like opening and breaking down boxes Fairly smooth action
Cons:
Blade isn't ideal for all situations Some steel blades at the same MSRP are way more versatile (subjective opinion) Blades might have to be replaced instead of sharpened
Overall, this will probably either be outstanding for you or you might find it lacking. It seems like it is a bit costly but that extra expense does go towards a safer blade...that's great for most but I really like the value that I feel like I get from a comparatively equally priced steel knife as I can sharpen it and I am not in need of the extra safety benefits.
