Perfect laptop to support my current work from home arrangement

I have been using Chromebook for a while, but my previous laptop was way under power to perform specific task. So I decided to get Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5 since the current work from home arrangement will last for quite a while.

So far I am happy with the purchase, with just 2 issues that is not significant, but a little annoying nonetheless..

This Chromebook is able to handle most of collaboration tool our company is using without lagging: Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, etc.. and I am able to do document editing as well without much problem. Streaming video is a breeze, and I'm able to open multiple tabs without any significant lag at all.

Android and Linux support is great and now I am able to VPN to my office (my previous Chromebook unable to do that since there is no Fortinet client for Chromebook yet). SSH/SFTP tools that I need to access my servers in office are available in abundant in both Android apps and also Linux apps, and I can just choose to use Filezilla for Debian distro instead of paying for some SFTP solution on Google Play (I am stilll not able to find a good and free SFTP solution on Google Play).

The 2 issues I mentioned that I hope can be resolved by Google as well as Lenovo as follow:
- Image browsing is still painful when dealing with a folder containing hundreds of photos. Even my Android phone with lesser processing power, perform much better in this area. Image editing is not as integrated as I would like to be as well.
- Keyboard has been great, except my SPACE button. You can see if from this review (I didn't do editing to show that SPACE button is a pain). You can see multiple double spaces in this review, which I think is the result of the button too sensitive, and tend to create double spaces when I intend to do just single space.

Other than that, everything else is great. I don't really miss my windows or mac, unless for development purpose, which Chromebook is not designed for anyway.

My 1st Chromebook that I want to use at home for meetings and casting, didn't really intend to carry it around. I was shopping around for a long time, overwhelmed by the dozens of different models, but finally settled on this Lenovo model due to the Core i3 processor, 8GB RAM and 64GB SSD. When I received the package, i was pleasantly surprised by the fine quality of the build, touch and colour. The fine touches such as backlit keyboard, camera lens cover (see photos) are very considerate design touches at this price point. The keyboard typing is very responsive and feel like the MS Surface keyboard. The screen resolution and touch screen response are perfect. At <$700, this Chromebook is a great value purchase. Ports available are 2xUSB-C, 1xUSB-A, 1xmicro SD card slot, 1x3.5mm audio jack, 1xKensingotn lock slot. Volume rocker and power button are on the right side.

I purchased this to be a "commuter" device for university. My Windows laptop is a bit too expensive and fragile for me to want to stuff it in a backpack and carry it around all day. When I purchased this, I was looking for something that could be used for video conference lectures, that I could do schoolwork on, and that I could use for light internet browsing during study breaks. I used it during the fall 2020 semester, and this met those expectations and more. Here's the "Good, Okay, Bad" breakdown.

Good:

The convertible screen ended up being incredibly valuable, once I finally got my hands on a USI stylus. I used it to take notes directly on PDFs of my lecture materials using Squid, and it really upped my study game.

If you're already deep in the Google ecosystem, this is a really handy device to have. My Pixel paired easily and now I can see my text messages on my computer. That's really cool.

Startup takes no time at all.

The battery life is impressive. I can consistently get at least 8 hours of heavy use, even with my brightness turned all the way up. It charges really fast, too.

The screen is clear, bright, and vibrant. I'm used to a much larger screen on my Windows laptop, and the transition to this smaller screen was easy, because the quality is so nice.

It's a durable little sucker. I'm kind of hard on my electronics. Four months of daily use, and it still looks the same as it did the day I unboxed it.

The keyboard is excellent and I love that it's backlit. I wish it had a 10-key numpad, but it definitely wouldn't fit one.

The touchpad is also excellent and I love that it supports multi-touch.

I'm just a big fan of Chrome OS. It's simple and easy to use. There's almost no learning curve. It has a lot of fun little tricks that make it really simple and efficient to use.

Okay:

The RAM is sufficient for my needs. It gets a little laggy when I have a lot of tabs open and apps running simultaneously. By "a lot," I mean like 20+. I currently have 12 tabs, one of which is a youtube video, and Google Hangouts open and it's running fine. It sometimes struggles to handle having multiple youtube videos open, or having a youtube video paused in the background while I do a video call. It has crashed on me a few times, almost always when I have multiple youtube tabs or streaming services running simultaneously. But as long as I'm careful about how much I have open at one time, it's fine.

The touchscreen is just okay, even with the USI stylus. It's not bad exactly, but sometimes it takes a while to recognize my USI stylus. I'm not sure if that's a problem with the stylus or the Chromebook. Palm rejection, latency, and smoothness vary a lot depending on the app you're using. (I tried every handwriting app in the play store.) I've never used it to draw. I wouldn't use this as a tablet replacement. It's a little bit too big and the layout is a little bit too unwieldy.

The app selection is okay. You can run most Android apps on a Chromebook. Usually they work fine. Sometimes they're a little clunky.

The webcam is alright. It's nothing fancy, but it's fine for video calls. I like the privacy cover.

Bad:

The speakers aren't great. They're loud enough, but they're tinny with no bass. The speakers on my Pixel 3a are objectively better. I almost always use headphones, so this isn't a huge problem for me - I didn't even notice until I'd already owned this Chromebook for a few months. But if listening to music without headphones or an external speaker is important to you, this might not be the device for you.

Overall, I'm very happy with the Flex 5. I would recommend it if...

You already have a more powerful Windows or Mac device and want something lightweight, cheap, and sturdy to carry around.

You're caught between buying a tablet and a laptop, because you want a bigger screen/better keyboard/more traditional computer-like interface than you can get with a tablet, but you don't want to spend a ton of money on a laptop or sacrifice features and durability for a low-tier laptop. (This is the perfect compromise for that, especially if you're already a Google/Android user.)

You're a light computer user who basically just wants an internet machine, but you want a nice internet machine. I would highly recommend this for an older adult or a kid who doesn't need any fancy software.

You already own Android or Google devices and want something that will complement them.

I use this at home, connected to a big screen. I keep the laptop closed most of the time while I'm using it. It's been great for school. There has only been 1 or 2 things I couldn't do with the android system for classes and I just did those up at the school. It's still going strong and runs super fast. If you don't need the windows operating system, most people don't, then get this. The I3 and SSD make this run like a windows I7. After 2 years it's still starts up in seconds and everything it does is still super quick.

Overall, this has been a good laptop alternative. I had a Dell XPS before this and of course you can't really compare the two, however this is a third of the price of the Dell. I didn't start out looking for a Chromebook but as I was researching for a new laptop (the Dell's battery went dead after a little more than 3 years) I realized I really didn't need Windows 99% of the time. This had good reviews from quite a few websites and well known you tube channels. After almost two years I'd have to say it was a good, and inexpensive, investment. My only negatives would be that it has slowed down a bit over time but not so much that it's really a problem, at least not for me. The other negative, however can be a problem-the speakers. I know you can't expect a lot but it's a shame that a device that has a really great screen has such mediocre sound. Watching a movie or even some videos becomes less of an experience than it could be simply because the audio is weak. Headphones aren't always practical and if you have any background noise at all it can be difficult to hear. I will still stick with a Chromebook but I'll make sure my next one has better speakers.

Thing works great! I'm super pleased with the performance for the price!

Note: I don't really use the touchscreen (except on accident) and for the couple times I folded it in half to try out tablet-mode; which I found to be a bit unwieldy due to it's size.

I specifically bought this because I've always had a high-end frame of mind for pc performance. So this is the wimpiest processor I've every bought in a device. I typically spend big and then keep the device for a decade. Ex the dell xps 17" I bought in 2012, is still wildly faster than my work laptop with the cheapest i5 money can buy. I absolutely loathe that on my work Lenovo i5 8GB RAM, I can barely use accuweather.com or weather.com because of all the ads. The fan spins up and usually the pages will crash. <- obviously a distraction from THIS device, but wanted to give context, these experiences mean I'd never consider a machine with an i5, let alone a lowly i3.

Fast forward to a few months ago, spent a few weeks trying to recover as much as I could from my grandpa's failing disk. I was working on fixing it, restoring the image I collected from the spinning disk to SSD etc. After fighting with the unbearably slow hardware I decided that I was going to gather the troops (grandkids) and solicit donations to replace it for him. Ended up with a 17" Acer (or maybe Asus, idr) but the thing that stuck out was the i3 1115g4 that was in it. I thought this thing was going to work at a snail's pace, and I was pleasantly surprised that a not-top-end, heck not-even-middle-grade processor, could be so snappy (thanks NVMe's!!!). I worked with it a bit setting it up for him and thought it was great.

So I bought this Chromebook because a) Wirecutter recommended it b) it had the same processor as "Papa's" Windows 11 laptop. I figured with ChromeOS being super lightweight, this processor would have no issues keeping up with a bunch of chrome windows and tabs. It keeps right up, I hear the fan spin up only rarely, and really only when I have lots of tabs open. Honestly it only gets choked up when you visit a website riddled with ads, I'm looking at you weather sites, MSN (exclusively for testing if adblockers work ;-)).
Grain of Salt: I DO have a network level ad-blocker that I installed over the summer, so a lot of ads are blocked, and everything seems snappier when a majority of ads can't load.

Cons:
I find it irritating that the keyboard lacks F keys, though there's a setting you can set to replace the fn buttons with typical f-key actions. There's also no home/end, page-up/down keys for easily selecting a line of text, but the right combinations of the shift/ctrl/alt keys + arrow keys somewhat reproduce this.

Just OK:
I have 1440p monitors, so falling back to 1080 on this leaves me desiring a little more screen real estate. Camera is just ok, but I love the built in slider for blocking it.

Overall, fantastic, would 100% buy again, I happily paid $365 for it on sale, but today it's $317.99, and I once almost ordered one for my wife (maybe pre-prime sale?) for $279 but I took a few hours to "think about it" and they were out of stock.
