I am a GM tech, I work flat rate which means i get paid by the job. These picks are great for reaching GM's trans line clips/oil line clips. With these picks I can finish one specfic job that pays 7 hours in 3 because of the long reach and funky angles. amazing for techs!
I got the "new version" with the yellow grips in the full hook design. I noticed that the hook was now more open like all of the chinese designs rather than the older (and better, imho) design that was closed a little more. Made quick work of that and bent it into something more useful to me. The steel is ok, definitely a bit softer than the old one or from other good quality brands - chrome did not chip away as I worked it, which is good. Small gripe is that the grip is a 3-flat and they didn't bother to align it with the hook one way or the other...mine is cocked at an odd angle that actually makes it a pain when you want to utilize the grip. Often it doesn't matter but this is a dumb oversight by the product designers and/or the assembly at the factory. Line it up right or make it round where it won't matter if you don't. It's nice to have the longer length (6" shaft length) but keep in mind the hook is still a little wide so it won't go down into smaller holes/tubing, or if it barely fits you won't be able to maneuver it. I have some cheapie stainless loop-handled ones from Pakistan that all finally broke or disappeared...those were better but this is the closest decent substitute I could find. I wish someone would make one of these with a little smaller hook and in a 10-12 inch shaft length. Anyway, this is ok but doesn't seem appreciably better than many of the other cheaper China hooks/picks although there is some junk out there. Worth a buy. Nice to have them available individually.
Gear wrench has really impressed me with their quality and durability of tooling. I’m an aircraft mechanic and these are every bit as durable as snap-on brand. Very impressed, top it off you can throw them right in your toolbox with the organizer tray they come in and it makes them easy to find
On my very first use of one of the hooks, the shank pulled out of the handle. I hate to keep picking on Oriental manufacturing, but anything made in China or Tawain ( with a few exceptions) is junk. I had to return this set. I am now purchasing a hook and pick set from Snapon
Large assortment and they are nice and thin to get into some tight areas however they bend very easy. The handles are comfortable but even trying to get behind a stuck in seal they bend way to much a little give is expected but there should be enough strength to pry a washer or stuck oring
I own a set of the shorter mini picks and use them a lot. I've been in situations where I wished I had a longer (shaft) mini pick! This fits the bill perfectly for me. You might not notice, but there's a nice knurl on the shaft - this helps with the control. The multiple heads should cover almost any application you might run into. There's not too many options for these longer mini picks, and lucky Gearwrench offers an economically priced set!
Good quality, however if you try to twist it to hard or pull on something hard the steel insert will pull out of the handle so I have to use pliers on the steel if I’m trying to pull out a vent, radio, or etc. the steels pressed into plastic which is splined into the handle.
