They added an RFID chip on their cardboard rolls to make you buy their labels. The printer will not print without this. Dymo 5XL 550 and 550 Turbo are all designed like this. Should rename it the Dymo "5X more expensive labels"
The product listing used to say (it is now deleted): "For best performance, use DYMO LabelWriter Labels in a variety of sizes"
It should say:
"For ONLY performance, use DYMO LabelWriter Labels in a variety of sizes because we locked you out of using 3rd party labels."
I was expecting to at least be able to use 3rd party labels but they lock the printer to where you cant even print without their RFID chipped label core.
I was excited that the price was cheaper than their 4XL, had a power button, and had networking capabilities. None of that matters when you chip a label roll and force the consumer to buy supplies from you. Time will tell when nobody wants to buy this or Dymo sees an increase in customer returns after discovering how it was designed. I would recommend not buying any of their new generation labelmakers until this is updated with a software/firmware update that allows you to use the printer with 3rd party labels or until China copies the chips on the rolls offering a more affordable label alternative. Sadly a waste of an updated product as of now.
Be aware before buying this machine. It is brand new and REQUIRES dymo labels. It will not work with anything but DYMO. Comparing the price of DYMO versus off Brands of Labels. For a box of 24 4 x 6 labels I can buy them on amazon for $35.00 for Generic and Dymo is $250. I think DYMO doing this to small businesses like mine will prevent many from Buying this so I wanted to warn those that are looking at it to purchase. If anyone has a work around let me know as I wasted $200.00 on this. I REFUSE to pay for dymo labels at this price. Dymo Needs to lower the price of labels or make this machine compatible with other labels. NOT GOOD NOT GOOD
We have (3) DYMO 4XL printers for shipping e-commerce orders, they can be finicky but they work. We use colored 4"x6" DYMO compatible shipping labels from a 3rd party without an issue. The only real problem is they cut the top off of the UPS & USPS labels when using Pirate Ship or Shippo, whether we use Genuine DYMO labels or our 3rd party colored labels, so it's not the labels. So, we thought we would try the NEW DYMO 5XL and see if this issue would change. Not only did the issue not change, but now DYMO has attached a chip to the cardboard core of their labels now and NO 3rd Party labels will work with the 5XL printer AT ALL unless you buy a NEW roll each time just to use their core!!! They have tried to monopolize the use of only their labels in the printer. Although it does state this clearly in several places, this has always been doable on 4XL. This time they really locked it down. Their label selection for this printer is limited to white labels, because that's all they offer, so they are forcing us to never buy from them again! Stupid move DYMO. Our new printers in the future will be Zebra or similar.
Very annoying when it comes to the problem of using 3rd party labels. They force you to use their labels only. These are expensive. Also just the idea that you buy a printer and then they have the audacity to say you can only use their paper. Would anyone of us buy a burger if they told us that in our own home we could only use the buns that came from the same company. On the part of dymo, this is such a sleazy move that people who have used dymo for a long time will want something different.
This printer will not work with 3rd party labels. Dymo is locking you into their labels via anti-competitive DRM on a RFID in the rolls which prevent you from using non-DYMO (or even older DYMO branded) labels.
This makes the use of this printer prohibitively expensive.
Unless DYMO changes this policy and pushes out an update to fix this I highly recommend that you get another brand of printer instead and avoid DYMO products at all costs.
Don't be fooled by the high stars, they are bundling this with the labels and the older versions to make it seem like it's not a 1 star product.
DYMO is now preventing people from using their own thermal labels in this printer, which means that if you have an existing stock of labels or a custom label with your logo preprinted in color on it to use in literally every thermal laser printer that has ever existed, NOPE DYMO LABELS ONLY... Which they don't make with your logo on them in color!
Even if someone ends up making some clone label or hack for this, do not support this company in any way for their abusive DRM implementation and do not purchase their products.
Yes, unbeliveable but true. I messed with this thing for an hour trying to figure out why the labels wouldn't work. Then with support the truth comes out. They will NOT tell you this when your talking to them. This is now garbage. There is no way to trick the RFID either as it remembers how many are printed on THAT roll. So removing the RFID will not allow you to continue using that size label. SO STUPID! I have 6 printers at the office. Someone else will now get our business. And we wonder why chinese junk is so popular.
Absolute rubbish! You can only use Green Label boxed Dymo labels and there is no way to guarantee on any Amazon listing that you will receive these instead of the older Blue Label boxed Dymo Labels. Had I known this was going to be such an issue I would never have bothered buying this product - and I can’t even return it because it wasn’t until AFTER the return window closed we needed more labels. Go figure. Do what we did and buy the MUNBYN Printer instead.
Biggest issue is it doesn’t not always recognize a Dymo lable. Using 4x6 labels we have to keep taking out and trying different rolls to get it to recognize. These are actual Dymo provided labels. Not aftermarket. Seems that to curtail the aftermarket folks, Dymo has instituted some security that will not allow a non Dymo label to be used. Fair enough. But when it won’t recognize its own labels consistently, you have a problem. We have several 4XL & 450Turbos Real workhorses we use for product labeling. Hundred a labels a day they everyone.
The 5XL in service is horrible. Put on a new roll and every 3rd one it won’t recognize. On top of that the feeder regular snarls the feed and you have to pull the front off to unjam.
We have opted to buy older 4XL’s as we find them.
I hate to say this, but I recommend NOT Buying a 5XL until Dymo can work this label recognition issue out. If you can, find a 4XL. Excellent. And the 450 Turbo. Excellent.
We have canceled our orders for the new 550 Turbo(they are still not available anyway). Not worth the risk of getting the same issue as the 5XL.
all of the 5-star reviews on this page are for the older 4XL. If you look at the newer reviews, you will see they are all 1-star reviews. Don't get tricked by this dishonest and honestly un-lawful practice.
If you want to use the hardware you own to print on "non genuine" labels this is not the printer for you. Network connection will drop out after a short time for no use and requires a manual power cycle to fix.
