4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, approved by a player of the 1994 original

This is a follow-up to the Pocky & Rocky series, most known by old-school gamers from its first Super Nintendo game in 1994. This game takes just about all of its inspiration from that installment and lovingly strums those nostalgia strings. The graphics, music, and overall presentation have been touched up by people who clearly hold fondness for the first Pocky & Rocky game.

The gameplay is the same action/shooter that we all love. Just like in the 90s, the game is tough as nails so expect to lose a couple of times on your first playthrough. However, the game does differ from the original in that it is a bit slower and more methodical than the original. In the original, you could hold down the fire button and plow your way through. In Reshrined, enemies take more damage, and the game adds some new abilities which require you to hang back and set up your assault. If you are coming straight from the SNES title, this is a bit of a change that will make the game make so much more sense when you adopt it.

However, I feel this game can use twin stick functionality. Since the player can only fire in the direction they're traveling, that means they can't dodge and attack at the same time. Enemies stay on screen longer and attack quicker, so I couldn't stay on the offensive for very long. I had to rely heavily on the "attack augmentation" ability and got comparatively little use out of my basic attacks and the power-up system. Then again, that could just be me having growing pains feeling out the game's intricacies. For all I know, twin stick shooting may have made the game too easy and shallow.

One thing that baffled me about this game is that the game's easier difficulty is not available from the start. It needs to be unlocked by collecting coins. After I completed a full playthrough, I had just barely over half the amount of coins needed. I can't imagine what it's like for players who can't keep up, just wanted a more relaxed gaming experience, and learned that it was available but they needed to grind out the currency. If this were the criteria for unlocking harder difficulties, there would be no problem. "Easy mode" usually serves as a demo-like experience that encourages players to get better and level up to Normal to get the full experience. As it stands now, this feels like the developers saw their unlockables were thin and grabbed off a feature that was originally available out the box.

Despite the fact that I really needed to call the game out on how it treated its Easy Mode with a lengthy paragraph, it doesn't take that much away from the game. It's fun, challenging, charming with its stylized cartoon graphics, and faithful to a series that brought so much joy to kids nearly three decades ago. I highly recommend it to retro gaming enjoyers and new players alike - we might even get more installments or classic revivals if it does well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Classic Era of Video Games

I'd like to address some of the criticisms I've seen for this game:

1) A character portrait is censored

A character's portrait (not her sprite) has her cleavage covered up during story mode cutscenes. All told, she has maybe three minutes of screen time. Let's be realistic: are you going to deny yourself playing a game because of such a minor complaint? The only way you'd notice there's any censorship is if you looked into the matter online. As far as I'm concerned, a slight visual adjustment is not worth boycotting this release, and I have a suspicion that anyone saying otherwise had no intention on buying this game to begin with.

2) The game is too difficult, and easy mode should be unlocked from the beginning

Pocky & Rocky is an arcade game whose premise is based on players replaying the game over and again until they can complete it without dying. From there, dedicated players can attempt to obtain a high score to rank on the leaderboard. Welcome to the '80s and early '90s era of video games. This game is less than an hour long. The difficulty is what lends replayability to the experience. That desire to achieve mastery. That feeling of satisfaction you get when you complete a level without dying.

Should the easy difficulty mode be present from the beginning? No. It shouldn't be in the game to begin with. The story mode is quite generous with checkpoints and offers unlimited continues, which is more than enough to ensure anyone can beat the game.

3) 2-player mode should be available from the beginning

You need to complete the story mode to unlock multiplayer, which shouldn't take more than two hours for even the weakest player that credit feeds the entire experience. I see no reason why multiplayer should not be available from the onset, but this is not a tall order to ask of the player. Beat it once, and you permanently unlock multiplayer.

Most of these complaints I've seen are from people that are stunned to see that an arcade game is being released without modern accommodations. Never mind that Natsume (the developer) already released two remakes of arcade games in the past several years (Wild Guns and Ninja Saviors) that were also somewhat challenging and required the player to complete the games several times to unlock features.

This is a beautiful-looking, faithful reimagining of a niche shooter from 30 years ago. Curb your expectations if you were expecting it to be something it's not.

This game looks amazing. It’s hard. One thing I didn’t like was that you can’t lock a character in place with a button, to help with aiming and shooting, you have to move around to aim and that’s it. Good nostalgia bait. Hope your copy is worth thousands in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Remake
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on 29 June 2022

This game really brings you back to the the first 3 games, more specifically the first SNES title. You’ll think it’s a remake, but in terms of story and characters, it’s not and it was done in a clever way.

The game controls just as well as it always has, and the new Sprite art is absolutely beautiful! Some of the new renditions of the music is done great also. They gave the same love and care for this title as they did with their others. (Wild Guns/Ninja Saviors[Warriors for SNES]).

The person saying you’ll take SEVERAL HOURS to be able to play 2 player? They didn’t play it..the game is beaten fairly easily within a little over an hour. Which brings me to my next point, the difficulty is far more balanced here then it’s predecessors. Unlimited continues as usual, but now we have check points. The check points make everything so much easier. I swear, everyone just doesn’t use the controls correctly for these games, so they don’t use their deflector to help not take damage from most projectiles. They just don’t do it lol I unlocked 2 player in a couple hours, but yeah it should’ve been at least in free play (even though it would make zero sense in the story being told)

The one star censorship reviews? Get this. People are not buying a game for the NTSC region because there is an omission of CLEAVAGE in a game where you play as a CHILD. Yes. That’s literally the only censoring, that there’s a new playable character who wears an extra part of her to cover her cleavage. The font for the Japanese cover and the color is pure ugly, so I guess if we’re buying the game solely based on a single arbitrary visual, I’d go with the NTSC for the better cover as opposed to again, CLEAVAGE in a Pocky and Rocky game. I wouldn’t hold any water with those reviews.

Give this game a try! Much easier than the earlier titles, and so much love and care went into it. I’ve also noticed there’s not really much of a different in easy mode aside from unlimited lives. Who plays a Pocky and Rocky game just to basically cheat?

Welcome back Pocky and Rocky! 10/10

I could gush over this game forever. The shooting, dodging, and parrying feels great, the characters art and story are adorable and the hd retro presentation is just gorgeous with a fantastic soundtrack and variety of play styles in the different characters to boot!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Gaming, But

I loved the original SNES Pocky and Rock game. Great, hard, game to play and it's co-op! I would like for Pocky and Rocky 2 to get a remade for the Switch as well but that is a long shot. The new characters you get to play as. 5 total characters I believe. Loses two stars because of two things:

1. US version is Censored.
This isn't really a big deal for me since it doesn't affect the story or gameplay but it does suck for the western version to get censored. I guess showing a bit of cleavage is bad in the US even though most shows rated PG show more than this game does. Also, Uzume's sex appeal is part of her characterization in the myths.

2. No co-op mode.... not exactly
Yes there is still couch co-op mode for this game like the original but you will have to work for it. You will be able to play with a partner once you either collect 10,000 coins or beat the game for the first time. Once you beat the game for the first time, you unlock "extra easy" mode and "free play" which is the co-op mode. It sucks that you can't straight away open up the game, call a your player 2 over and save the world.

There is more to the second part but I included spoilers so scroll down if you wish to read the spoilers. Overall the game is still a solid pick up to play with friends. Just know that it is censored and you will have to beat it first before enjoying the co-op play.

SPOILER

I had to beat the game quickly to unlock the 2 player mode so that if anybody wanted to play it we can kick ass.
There are 8 stages in total. All are difficult their own way. The one thing I did like is that it felt like it was made easier so you can beat the game. I remember Pocky and Rocky being tough as nails, no checkpoints and pretty much no saves. All in one go. This version there are checkpoints and saves in case you need to put down the Switch or have something else to do. It took me two days to beat because I had to work and put down the Switch. Total time about 3 hours. I think it can take much less time, just depends on how good you are at the game. Second time around I was able to make it to the second level under 15 minutes where in the first time around it probably took me close to 35 minutes. Don't forget to beat it again to unlock a character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard, but everything I wanted it to be!

Let me just start off with this: I don’t care about the censorship. I really don’t need to see cartoon cleavage, it’s not why I buy a game. I buy a game to enjoy the gameplay. It does not break the core concept of the game for a small bit of censorship.

I also went into this game knowing that Pocky and Rocky games are hard. An easy mode being locked does seem silly, but I’m not playing Pocky and Rocky on easy. The original games were not easy, I don’t know why anyone would complain about the difficulty now because this entry isn’t harder than the others on the default difficulty.

With those 1 star review rebuttals out of the way. Now I can praise the excellent sprite art, gameplay and music.

It’s a beautiful game, I find myself just smiling while playing because just like with Wild Guns Reloaded and Ninja Saviors, Natsume has done an excellent job updating the graphics.

The gameplay is challenging, but extremely fun. I’ve enjoyed almost every game in this series, but I think with the added depth of the new attacks that the characters can do and the all new characters you get to play as, this is my favorite in the series.

Music is catchy and is easily one of the best parts about the game.

If you love Pocky and Rocky, grab this game. If you care about the censorship and just NEED to look at animated cleavage, get the Japanese version over the North American version. Overall the game is phenomenal either way you play it.

Bought this on a whim, and wow this game is a lot harder than I anticipated but in a good way! Cute art style and setting make it impossible to take seriously, and story is sort of meh, but the game play and characters you can play as are fun which is what really matters. Plays like a bullet-hell type game more than anything, which I had not expected but I haven't played a game like that in quite a while.

Game does feel a little overpriced at full price, so I'd wait for a sale if you want it but can wait.

If you played the original on the SNES or happened to play a doujin game called Sispri Gauntlet, then you will love this game. The American version is censored a bit but nothing game breaking, actually. I would have loved some goodies into the package but we're all used to barebones delivery nowadays.

I was quite a big fan of Pocky and Rocky on the SNES back in the day. I played that game a lot, and I really enjoyed it. So when I saw this, I was excited. And wow! I do not remember this game being so difficult! Have I just gotten that much worse at gaming? Are my reflexes now that slow at my age? I don’t know, but what I do know is, this game is way too difficult for a game that seems to be directed at the younger crowd! Or maybe I’m just too old to be good at this anymore…
