Not sure what the batteries are for. My husband said it was to hold the alarm in case of power outage but it cant run off only batteries so I am a little confused. If I have this wrong, please correct me! I didnt want a power cord on my vanty.

Progressively louder radio alarm super annoying

It’s meh. I would return it if I hadn’t gotten rid of the packaging. The radio alarm gets louder the longer it is on. I can’t figure out how to change this or if it’s even possible, I just want a normal radio alarm. The instructions, as many people have noted, are quite poor, and the controls are not super intuitive. The antenna is a long wire which I’m not a fan of. The one redeeming thing is that it looks very nice and sleek, but otherwise is difficult to use and again the radio alarm thing is super annoying.

There are more directions/information on this Amazon site than in the box!!! VERY FRUSTRATING setting it up and still can't get radio to scan. I can only get what the company appears to have preset. I've only once written a review on Amazon and I buy a lot. Awful trying to set up and have given up on music stations I enjoy.

The Philips clock radio comes simply packaged in a bright blue-colored retail box with photos of the product and manufacturer's info on the outside. Inside the box, right on top is a folded instruction booklet and a warranty booklet.. Underneath that is the clock radio itself packed in a foam padded baggie, and a small white box that contains the wall-wart style power supply. The power supply converts line voltage down to USB-type voltage- 5.0 volts and 1.5 amps with a total output of 7.5 watts. There is a noise filter built into the line and it's a standard push-in plug-type connection. The bottom of the clock has a small plastic door to a battery compartment which takes to AAA batteries. Setting the time isn't overly complicated, the instructions have pictograms that will show you step by step. One thing I did find, is that when setting your hours or minutes, and if you go past your target, you'll have to go completely around again to set the numbers. Numbers. They don't have a backup button. To charge your phone from the clock radio, there is a USBA port in the back of the unit for you to plug in the adapter cable for your particular phone. For operating the FM radio, there is a single power button on the top and you can scan between channels or press buttons to go directly to your favorite station. There is a sleep button on the top ranging from presets of 15 minutes to 120, so you can go to sleep listening to the radio if you wish. You can also set two alarms and should you need them, the snooze button is front and center. The snooze button also acts as a brightness control if you wish to dim it at night.
As far as listening to the radio, even though the speaker is pretty small, it's not horrible in sound output, especially if you can consider that most clock radios are going to be on a table right near the bed so you don't have to crank the sound. Anyway. Sound anyway. The readout is bright and clear, and big enough to read from a distance. The numbers of the clock end up being about an inch and a half tall.

I gave this less than 5 stars b/c the alarm sound is really annoying and it can't be changed (from what I can tell). Maybe I am just too used to the luxury of being able to pick sounds from my phone. Regardless, this clock is a good solution if you are looking to release yourself from having your phone by your bed/in your bedroom to wake you up.

I have reviewed a few other alarm clocks but this is the first one I have given 5 stars. The instructions are simple to understand. I like that the FM radio doesn't use up any WiFi bandwidth and that the FM receiver is strong enough that the radio reception is clear. The time display is very clear and simple to read. The ability to dim the clock time works perfectly for me. Setting the alarms was a little confusing at first and I am afraid that if I need to reset the alarms in the future, I will have to keep the instructions handy. Of course - the battery backup is a good option to have with any timepiece.
• I might give this advice to the makers of the radio. Use a darker ink for the instructions in the images - as blue ink is not the easiest to read. I have older eyes (along with the rest of me) and some of the images needed to be enlarged to read but once enlarged, they were easy to follow. [Quick tip - take a picture with your phone and then zoom in on the image for enlargements.] Another observation about this clock radio is the presets (there are 20) are all on the same button. So if the radio is tuned to Preset 4, and you want to listen to Preset 2, you have to advance through all the other Presets to come back around again to Preset 2. I don't know how complicated it would be to either only give 10 presets or offer two buttons (one for the first 10 Presets and another for the next 10 presets) but that might be easier to navigate. The final comment which might be useful is the idea that a person could listen through to what is on their phone while it's being charged. I listen to a lot of podcasts, and since my phone is already charging through the radio, that would be convenient. Even with all the little comments, I like this clock radio and I literally threw my old one out. I'm all in now.
