If you've ever used a steel trashcan, which are usually heavy at the base, you'll be used to step-open trashcans staying completely in place when you step on them. This is plastic, so it's much lighter than steel. This means that when the trashcan is relatively empty, it'll move around quite a bit when you step on it. This can be annoying because you then have to position it back into place, and it just feels cheap when your trash can moves around when you step on it, no matter how high-quality the can.Reviewed in the United States on 16 June 2018
No worries, however. You can buy a gallon of distilled water for less than a dollar the next time you visit your local grocery store and place it in the bottom of the trash can to weigh it down. Then, no matter how aggressively you step, it'll stay completely in place, and your Trash Can Experience will have been elevated from Mildly Irritating to Extremely Pleasurable.
Don't worry, there will still be plenty of room once you add your gallon of distilled water; I use standard kitchen trash bags and the bottom of one of these bags rests just above the gallon of distilled water. Obviously, you don't pour the water into the can; just place the unopened gallon on its side in the bottom of the can.
This trash can is High Quality and Highly Affordable. The lack of weight in the base is it's Achilles Heel, but if you employ this Powerful Distilled Water Trick for less than a buck, this baby will sing every time you open its mouth.
As a bonus, if there's ever a natural disaster or some other doomsday scenario, you've taken your first step to prepping your survival stash ;)

Originally bought and 4 star rated the simplehuman 6 liter/1.6 gal "trash can". It's attractive, inside as well as outside, with smooth, rounded surfaces AND a removable bucket that cleverly fits inside the "can" so you don't have to use plastic garbage bags. Just remove the bucket, dump the contents in the recycling/whatever and, if there's ever a mess, rise it with hot water in the sink. My only compliant is, at 1.6 gallons, its capacity is a tad small.
Liking the brand, I bought this slightly larger model without carefully reading the product description first - my bad. I didn't realize that this product lacks a removable bucket and all the internal and external mechanical elements are readily visible. This, in turn, is why they ever so carefully explain and push the need to buy unique, and expensive, custom sized garbage bags. Bag sizes that you can only buy from simplehuman at a cost of almost 15 cents/bag or about $15 per 100!
Last, since the metal rods and operating mechanisms that lift the lid are fully visible from the rear, you can only attractively position this product in a limited number of ways.
Before buying this particular product make very sure that you have reviewed the product descriptions, pictures, and ratings. I would not but this again, but it's not worth the hassle to return.

I was very reluctant paying $40 for a plastic trash can, but with the impeccable reviews, I knew I was making a good decision. I've had mine for one month now and it's been great. The step to open the lid is as reliable as it was the first day I used it and the lid closes super quietly. It's a perfect trash can for those who live in a small space. The Glad tall kitchen bags (13 gallon) fit this trash can perfectly. I am very happy with my purchase.

Good can until it breaks. Ours lasted 4 years. The hinge on the back is made of plastic and wears away over time. When the slot gets too big, the lid falls off whenever you try to open it. I don't see an obvious way to repair it. 3 stars.Reviewed in the United States on 16 July 2016
Edit: SimpleHuman replaced the lid under warranty. Easy and fast! Upgraded to 4 stars.
